I think today is the day that guys will be told if they have a spot or not. Signing day yesterday set the number in each room. Had to make sure some guys signed before telling dudes from the current roster they don't have a spot.

Just a theory though.

So I’ve got a question about all this transfer portal stuff……. (I’ve had some time to think about these goofy questions driving back and forth to the elevator since my radio took a dump in my semi and I haven’t taken the time to tear my dash apart to put a new one in)
How are we going to handle “legacy recruits” in about 20 years? Someone’s dad who played here for one season like Casey Thompson? Or do they have to have finished their career here? Or played a majority of their career here?

Probably dudes who played all of and/or finished their career here who also seem to give a shit that they played at Nebraska

I guess I've landed on the opinion that when it comes to your coaching staff the most important characteristic you now need is to have one superstar talent evaluator for each side of the ball and then probably two "salesmen" to attract recruits from the portal.

These skills have jumped ahead of talent development. Why waste 2-3 years developing a guy when you can just buy what you need ready made? Like why buy the ingredients for a pizza when you can get one cooked for you and delivered? We are all worried that Emmett Johnson might leave but I imagine we could replace him with someone similar or better by the end of the week.

Then you just need a coach like Dana to be the Xs and Os guy. Of course development won't go away completely, I'm just saying it's further down the list than it used to be.

Disclaimer: I don't like this reality. I liked football the way it was before. But things change and they didn't need my permission to do that changing. These thoughts are just me spitballing random ideas while I'm bored on break at work.

You really do not need salesmen or talent evaluators on the coaching staff at all, if by coaching staff you mean assistant coaches. On the coaching staff you need guys who can develop people into NFL players as ACs, and coordinators who can win games. That is the material for the salesmen, along with facilities, etc. Given the fact there is now no limit to staff size, you can hire recruiters/salesmen and evaluators into separate teams on the football staff. I think that is the way we have morphed, or are morphing.

Another poster who claims to work with EJ’s mom is now corroborating this. We’ll see I guess.
As the lead EJ Truther if he thinks he has a resume to land at a similar or better spot, e.g. Big Ten starting running back, more power to him.

But when you enter the portal potty, you always have to be prepared for the chances that you're wading into last night's Four Lokos and Taco Bell

Yes, I agree. And this could be possibly what they are doing for McGuire. By coaching staff I basically meant whoever the head coach hires. I don't know what else to call it.

On field staff vs. backroom? To me it's all the same overall group, but compartmentalized like you described it is probably more accurate. Even the rules for assistants and analysts has been blurred lately.

Ya this is not the year I would want to be in the portal as a mid level player. There will never be more names and talent in the portal than this year.
