2024-25 NCAA Tournament Bracketology/Bubble Watch

Saw these tweets last night and in another thread posted by @MtnHusker, and found them interesting. Many early projections had NU as a bubble team, and sure enough, they’re sitting in the ‘First Four Out’ as of this morning.

There is still a chance, but damn it’s been a frustrating season—so many chances to lock up an NCAA bid, yet they couldn’t quite get it done.

For years, the only path to postseason play was winning the conference tournament. Now, an NIT or Crown bid feels like a disappointment. But is it actually a good sign that NU is in the NCAA conversation for a second straight year?

It’ll be interesting to see what next year brings. Will NU take the next step, or will they slip back into being, well… Nebraska Basketball?

I think you hit the nail on the head that Nebraska basketball is performing right around how we would want them to perform. In the NCAA tournament conversation, get into the tournament every now and then, and hopefully eventually finally win one.

Everyone is (rightfully) upset right now because they had set themselves up to easily make the tournament this year if they could have just beat some shitty teams but they pissed it away.

This is where I'm at too. One year in the tourney and another right on the cut line. That is progress. Hell, even blue blood teams don't make the tournament every year. If we completely fall off next year then I'd be ready to have the conversation of change at the helm.

Is it bad that I've completely thrown in the towel and really don't want us to make the tournament, like at all?

Lets say a miracle happens and we do make it, oh yay, can't wait to get run out of the building first round

Basketball is my first true love for sports, with football a close second. It seems like ever since we joined the B1G that we've been questioning if we are getting screwed by the B1G scheduling & officiating in Basketball & Football.

I didn't watch the OSU game as it was on Peacock but listened to it. The announcers were livid about the officiating. During the game I was texting with my brother mentioning that as a Husker Fan we were all gun shy expecting a controversial late game call or 2 to go against us, and it happened. Our lack of success in Football & Basketball is a huge source of concern but it just gets exponentially worse when we never seem to get the beneficial calls in games.

A lot of people don't want to hear this, but by Nebrasketball standards, this has been an excellent 2 seasons.

The last time we were in the tournament two years in a row Daniel Nee ran the show.

Aside from last year, we've had 1 appearance in 25 seasons.

Yes. It's an incredibly good sign we're in the conversation two years in a row.

I get why people were frustrated because we were just battling for seeding 2-3 weeks ago, totally understandable. But if you zoom out this is the best back to back years we've had since Clinton was fondling young tramps in the White House.

Perspective & context. Well done.

Where some of us get frustrated is, Fred is paid top end money (top 5-7 in B1G) to coach in Lincoln. With that, and who he is, expectations are raised. And IMO, rightfully so.

Our trajectory is the best it's been in 25+ years. I don't think anyone can, or should, debate this. (It can also flat-line or go in the opposite direction next season as we have to replace a couple of dawgs.) But, at the end of the day it's about results. And not making the dance in 2025 will be a big disappointment. Our bid has been sitting right in front of us for 2.5 weeks and we've absolutely choked.

At some point, we as a fan base need to challenge the status quo because of who we have running the program. And the resources surrounding it. 6 years ago this month Fred was hired. If anyone said NU would make 1 NCAA tournanent in the next 6 seasons, they probably wouldn't of been as excited for the hire. I know I wouldn't of been....

...but, perspective & context. Right?

We are towards the bottom of the B1G in NIL money and we have no history or tradition to work with.

The resources surrounding it are not anywhere in the neighborhood of championship level.

You could make a strong argument that given those 2 things the results have been better than we deserve. When we can't even match resources with Pickle Smoochers, there's an issue.

Pure speculation. Hsitory and tradition are excuses. Fred wasn't hired for Nebrasketball to remain the same.

Nowhere did I mention championship level.

Straw-man is an easy argument for everyone.

If it’s true that NU is at the bottom of NIL, and you factor in the lack of history and tradition, winning here would be a challenge for anyone—but Hoiberg was brought in to deliver results despite those obstacles.

That said, if NU really is working with fewer resources—which I do believe compared to most—I’m pretty satisfied with what Hoiberg has accomplished the past couple of years, and I’d hope he can maintain or even build on that moving forward. As an NU fan, just being in the conversation is exciting—it’s not something we’ve experienced often over the last 30+ years.

However, given how rough his tenure started, I doubt he can afford many more seasons below .500 unless he does something special this year or in the next couple of seasons. But staying in the bubble conversation is a great start.

I can't believe people want to dump Fred

I don’t want to dump Fred, but I’m disappointed in how this team finished.

There were a handful of nice wins sprinkled through the season before the last month or so. I feel like there was really no way this team shouldn’t have found two more wins. Gave way too many games away.
