The three most pivotal games on Nebraska's 2023 schedule

This season will introduce a new era of Nebraska football under head coach Matt Rhule. The Huskers should find out right away what Year 1 has in store.

Here are three games that we think will ultimately define NU’s 2023 campaign, one way or another…

Week 1: at Minnesota

As mentioned, Nebraska won’t have to wait long for a chance to set the tone for its entire season.

Opening the year on the road on a Thursday night against a division opponent is about as important a start as it gets. The Huskers are currently listed as roughly seven-point underdogs, but the level of unknowns on both sidelines makes this a fascinating matchup.

Rhule and his staff still have many questions to answer before this one kicks off. But they will also be a complete mystery to the Golden Gophers – and everyone else, for that matter.

Now pair that element of surprise with Minnesota still needing to address its own concerns. Those include replacing record-setting QB Tanner Morgan, all-time leading rusher Mohamed Ibrahim, and three starters on the offensive line.

Going into his seventh season, P.J. Fleck is now one of the most established coaches in the Big Ten. That’s a big part of why the Gophers are early favorites. But an upset victory could catapult expectations in Lincoln right out of the gate.

Week 2: at Colorado

Again, this season will be defined immediately. A week after its opener in Minneapolis, Nebraska will head out to Boulder for another rematch with former rival Colorado.

Beyond all the old Big Eight and Big 12 nostalgia, this game will be squarely in the national spotlight. Deion Sanders’ home opener on FOX Big Noon Saturday during an otherwise mundane Week 2 slate. Yeah, everyone will be watching this one.

While the Huskers are going through their share of offseason turnover, no team in the country hit the reset button harder than Sanders and Co.

Between incoming freshmen and roughly 40 new transfers, Colorado will likely have around 50 of its 85 scholarship players going through their first CU practices in August. The Buffs are excited about newcomers like QB Sheduer Sanders, wideouts Jimmy Horn Jr. and Xavier Weaver, and WR/CB Travis Hunter.

This game will be critical for Nebraska, which is currently listed as an 8.5-point favorite. If the Huskers lose at Minnesota, they will desperately need to avoid an 0-2 start. If they beat the Gophers, they could pick up incredible momentum with two straight Power Five road wins to open the year.

Week 13: vs. Cockeye

There is no longer any debate: the Nebraska-Cockeye rivalry is real. That’s especially true after the Huskers finally snapped a seven-game losing streak in the series with a win in Cockeye City last season.

Now NU hopes to keep the Heroes Trophy for a second straight year by beating the Cockeyes in Memorial Stadium for the first time since 2012. In the context of what Black Friday could mean for both teams’ seasons, it’s equally important.

Given that Nebraska’s projected Vegas win total right now is six, there’s a real chance that this game might have to be victory No. 6. If so, snapping a six-year bowl game draught could ride on beating Cockeye.

Vegas isn’t much higher on the Cockeyes, placing their win total at around seven. But there’s also the storyline regarding offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz. After guiding one of the worst offenses in college football last season, Cockeye’s brass drew a clear line in the sand.

While Ferentz was retained for another year, the Hawks must win seven games and average 25 points to keep his job. Even in a loss, Nebraska could impact its rival’s future if Cockeye is hovering around the 25 ppg mark going into the finale.

Urban Meyer's Gaytor teams now with 2 convicted murderers

Ex-Florida Gaytors captain Tony Joiner pleads no contest to 2016 murder

He’s the second Gaytor of the Urban Meyer era to face murder charges.

Former Florida Gaytors football captain Earl “Tony” Joiner pleaded no contest this week to the 2016 murder of his girlfriend.

The plea deal, announced last month, calls for a 25-year sentence on the charge of second-degree murder with a firearm, according to Lee County Court records. Joiner, 37, is credited with 1,455 days in jail and will not be allowed to contact the victim’s family — including his two daughters.

Monday’s hearing came seven years after Heyzel Obando was found dead in Fort Myers at the age of 26. An affidavit obtained by The Ledger in Lakeland said Obando was shot in the head.

The case was quiet for years until an examination by Cold Justice, a true-crime show on the TV network Oxygen. After the show began its work, Joiner was arrested in June 2019. Authorities in Lee County credited the show’s work and budget for helping the investigation along.

Joiner appeared in 47 games with 27 starts for the Gaytors from 2004-07. The Haines City native led Florida defensive backs with 59 tackles during the 2006 national title run. He recorded a tackle and broke up a pass in the win over Ohio State in the BCS national championship game and was a captain on the 2007 team. He was also a teammate of Aaron Hernandez, the late Gaytors star who was found guilty of murder in 2015.

Nebraska football has apparently aligned itself with a B1G terrified of vampires

by Oliver Vandervoort 22 hours ago

Gene Smith and a shocking number of Big 10 administrators (thankfully outside of Nebraska football’s Turd Alberts) have a thing against playing night games at a level that makes me think they might have been better suited to have lived during an age before electricity.

Vampires aren’t real, okay Gene Smith? I promise that if Ohio State plays a night game in November, the worst thing that might happen is a loss. Not a loss of life, or immortal souls, but just an “L” on the score sheet.

Considering comments, the Buckeyes’ AD made to Eleven Warriors, it appears he’s going to take some convincing of that fact.

Ohio State takes on Michigan State at The Show on November 11 this season.

It appears Smith believes that’s the last November night game that OSU is going to commit to in the foreseeable future.

That’s newsworthy because quite a bit has been made about the new Big 10 deal with CBS including the promise of October and November night games.

Not long after the report surfaced about certain Big 10 teams balking at playing night games, Alberts made it clear that Nebraska football isn’t scared to play night games in November, or December or any time.

But Smith doubled down on Wednesday.

He cited “individual tolerances” for why he felt like Ohio State could part ways with Nebraska football and others and completely refuse to play any more late-season games in the dark.

What Smith and several other Big 10 ADs don’t seem to understand is just how bad their refusal makes the conference look.

The B1G is already a conference that has a PR problem when it comes to how they match up against the other Power 5 conferences around the country, especially the SEC.

Ironically, Ohio State helped its conference take a step forward last season when it almost knocked off eventual national champion Georgia. Now they’re acting like being out after dark is the scariest thing that a college football team could encounter.

It’s not a good look for Ohio State. It’s not a good look for the Big 10. And it’s not a good look for Nebraska football to be associated with a conference so weirdly stubborn about this kind of thing.

But Scott Fraud liked him because he could lift weights real good......🙄🙄🙄

This is an interesting move by ND. I know they have a relationship with NBC already, but so does the B1G. I wonder if this hire is smoke on ND looking to have someone help negotiate a better TV deal or an arrangement with the B1G.
Exactly, for sure it's not just a coincidence.
