Finally got to rewatch the game

But if they are 3 safeties high and we have Johnson as our RB with not elite speed, how can we do that? Cincy was basically keeping everything in front of them.

What worries me is if Michigan does something similar and EJ is getting 1-2 yards per carry instead of 3-4. Because the Wolverines can handle our WRs with their DBs.
I agree, it definitely was the worst case scenario, but it wasn’t like we didn’t have opportunities for big plays. Hunter falling down on that back shoulder throw, throwing it behind Mills instead of hitting him in stride, Barney got shoe laced once on what could have been a huge play, and EJ missed a cut multiple times that could have been big plays. Maybe I’m asking too much, but the potential was right there for the taking.

Edit: Like you said though, against Michigan it will be a tall order. That last game against them still haunts me. It will be interesting how we look against them when they aren’t cheating. (Hopefully)

I don’t disagree that Butler could’ve operated better. I’m just saying in his first game as DC I don’t necessarily consider it an indictment on game management moving forward but certainly something to watch.

In the end, they only gave up 17 points. That will win you most games if you have a good offense. Additionally, just like we’re not 100% sure how good we can be after 1 game. We also don’t 100% know what Cincinnati can be going forward. Let’s how their offense and Sorsby perform against some other defenses. I’m having trouble convincing myself they can be an elite/great offense, but I think they could be really good. And against BigXII defenses really good might be enough to win a bunch of games. We’ll see…

Can’t go back on my overs now. We will figure out our improvements we need to make and figure out a way to get to 8.

When we step away from Husker football and look at the whole CFB picture, we are not in any different spot than most other teams. We had questions and we still need answers to the same questions. I think that’s what has some people frustrated today as there aren’t any new answers to questions we’ve had for months.

I think people were expecting a year 3 jump and it was difficult to see it on the field Thursday. But who knows, we beat Michigan at home and all the handwringing goes away.

I was thinking the same on Rocco, great to have him, but if money was tight then it could have been spent elsewhere.

If money is tight that's fine but I'm tired of hearing from the Deans of the world how much money NU has one minute and then not having enough to pay for an RB or DT the next.
We should legit pool all our money together and offer to donate it to NIL but it has to go to a transfer portal DT who weighs over 300lbs as the stipulation

Agree. I think my concern is my questions seem even more glaring after our first game. Would have liked to see that we had an RB2 or a DL that could stuff things up the middle to alleviate concerns.

I think we are fine NIL-wise, if we get focus on the right spots such as DL/RB instead of OG. Think about an OT we had to pay 5% of our NIL that isn't even starting. When you buy that type of guy he has to produce.
The problem is we are dumping $3m in our QB who is a legit all-star....but we have him doing check-downs all game.

If that's all we're doing we could have a $500k QB and put that $2.5m elsewhere like RB etc

I'm not advocating for this. Just making a point. We have a shit ton of $$$ tied up w our QB but we then turn around and have him throw 10 yd outs all day.

To your last paragraph, do you think the crowd was worse at Arrowhead than it would have been in Memorial?

I don't disagree either way, an 8PM home game at Memorial has the fans juiced. I just think it was pretty loud there and pro-Nebraska.

I think the crowd was great. But, I also think it was awkward as the Cincy band played during timeouts. And they put a video online with BrendanSorsby that would ask, "Hey Bearcats, its 3rd down, get on your feet"

It was weird.

I'm saying I think Nebraska home games are good at creating a true homefield Environment.

This reminds me of the Brady/Manning era and players would take a huge pay cut so that they could play with one of those elite qb's and have a chance at a superbowl. Unfortunately, college isn't like that.

We can't get every single recruit/portal guy that we want. We're not Texas Tech(no one is). I'm sure the staff had plenty of D tackles/rb's on the radar but so did the rest of the country. It doesn't mean we can't be a 10 win program.

I think he will look much better against a different defense.

The story that is interesting to me is that OL from Charlotte that visited here and his family basically said "I know you have enough money for me and Raiola, but do you have enough to pay the other guys that want to come here with me?" Really interesting talk-track from him.

I hear ya. I just don't know if Memorial Stadium would have given a bigger homefield advantage. Road fans have a bit more venom (as Michael Bruntz said) than the people who just sit and come to games for 30 years. Not sure the Cincy band or the scoreboard telling the 6,000 Cincy fans to get on their feet really mattered to drown out what we had there.

It’s really unfortunate that we got so thoroughly exposed in the first game.

If every team lines up with 3 safeties, and makes us “PJ Fleck” Emmett into oblivion I will be cutting my wrists.

Agreed. We're going to check down to a 6-6 record. We're pretty easy for defenses to diagnose thus far. I had the same complaints last season and was told that it was because our WR's didn't have the speed to get open down the field. That shouldn't hold water this year.

I get that you take what the defense gives you. At the same time, are we ever going to run a playaction pass out of the 12 personnel where it was obvious we were running with EJ? Just your standard playaction over the top to a TE would have been nice on Thursday.

For the next 2 games I'd like to see 2 things from the Offense: EJ with limited touches because a 2nd and 3rd stringer have made their mark and our passing game letting some rip down field.

we are unquestionably in a great position regarding the revenue share, teams outside the P2 conferences are already starting to show some cracks. what remains to be seen now that the revenue share is in place is how much teams can get away with on the NIL side under the new rules. This season is kind of an anomaly in that schools were able to pay huge NIL deals under the old rules in the spring and then start paying players directly this fall

I think what we do with our '27 recruiting class will be telling. We are in on a lot of Top 100 players and already have two in the boat.
With a good season this year and recrutiing momentum building, we will have the opporutnity to spend a lot of NIL on high school recruiting. Will we capitalize, or will most of them go elsewhere because we can't afford that many blue chippers?

I don’t think “we got so thoroughly exposed in the first game.” There are things that need to be fixed and improved upon but “so thoroughly exposed” seems dramatic for giving up 17 points in the first game.

I'm not giving up hope of 8-4 (or better with luck). My thing is: Holgorsen is paid to fix this & I want to give him a chance to do so. I believe he CAN fix it. I think he's very smart and has an encyclopedia of coaching experience to pull from. My guess is that he thought the running game would open up more vs UC but it sounds like EJ left a bunch of yards on the table.

I think Holgorsen is smart enough to gameplan around this. My guess is they are going to hyper focus on the run game. I think we have the OL to do it. If that doesn't work then he's going to have to go to more of an Air Raid-esque type approach (I don't mean literally). My point is there are passing offenses that have success even when the entire stadium knows you're gonna pass - it's not impossible.

We're gonna have some pissed off boosters if we paid Dylan, Key, Hunter, Barney, etc all this $$$ for them to run check downs all season. I can't imagine Rhule or DH letting that happen.

The problem is we are dumping 3 mil into a qb that isn’t an all star
