Sure love those low 3 star portal moves, and the ones from directional state .......

I'm not usually by any standard a negative nanny, but I need to see some improvement and proper moves and this just isn't what we saw. To pretend otherwise is just silly.

Were you disappointed in how the portal haul went? I wasn’t clear from all your posts.

Holy strawman

Since it's page 309 and no one gives a shit anymore

Baron's Portal Prognosis

QB
Vs. last year: Push
Portal: Push. Statue Dylan out. Tony *Certified Scramble-y* Fumbles in.

RB
Vs. last year: Way down
Portal: Push. Jamiron Parker left, but he never practiced and if a bear shits in the woods, etc.

WR
Vs. last year: Slight down. I liked Key. He probably didn't get enough balls, but he blocked his dick off and I'm not going to pretend that's easily replaced after watching Neyor and Banks whiff for a season.
Portal: Up. Gilmer is a solid Big Ten receiver. The room is better with him.

TE
Vs. last year: Up. The room should get better with organic growth
Portal: n/a. Nothing happened

OL
Vs. last year. Slight up. I think they brought in a lot of talent. Losing both guards is a challenge, but they brought in a lot of dudes with starting experience.
Portal: Way up. Again, lots of starting experience in, no experience out. Maciejczak and Tapu are nothing losses, but a bummer on Houston as he mahalo'd on over to the Big House

DL
Vs. Last year: Down. Lost 2 starters even if they weren't good. Unclear who will replace even with additions. Betting big on Aurich and some guys breaking out
Portal: Down. Davis is a tough loss, should really be hitting his stride his 3rd year. Stoudmire and Washington are gambles. Maybe you're not as bullish on Davis as I am, but they didn't add any "slam dunks"

Edge
Vs. Last year: push. To be clear, a push on a bad unit here isn't good. It was one of the weakest positions on the team and still is.
Portal: slight up. Journeyman Jones is ok, but the room is better with him than without him, sadly.

LB
Vs last year: Up. I'm a big Javin Wright guy, but I think they hit a home run here this off-season
Portal: Way up. They approached the portal with the vim and vigor that they ought to have approached the DL and Edge positions. Room is a whole lot better.

DB
Vs last year: Down. Singleton and Wright are big losses. They did a lot of portal work here too but they really need Donovan Jones and Guthrie to get better naturally.
Portal: Slight up. McDougle was a nice add especially because he brings a familiarity with the new defense, but outside of that it felt like bodies in, bodies out with Hartzog, who didn't play after Cincinnati(?) being the only real loss

Staff
Vs. last year: Push. Aurich should hopefully be better, special teams will undoubtedly be worse.
Portal: Portal strategy left something to be desired with the failure to get edges and DL to campus (Trey White, Oregon DT). The only real silver lining for RB is they had a plan and didn't try to get dudes to campus and whiff, not that it makes it a good plan.

Right now I am just hoping that the clouds open up and a quality nose tackle (0 - 3 Tech) falls out of the sky and lands (alive and in game shape) in the middle of Memorial Stadium in by God; Lincoln, Nebraska .....
Maybe he brings a friend with him (or friends) who can and have played RB in P5 or even FCS football ....
I'll smile then, for the first time in a while ....

I've always assumed that Matt suffers from ADHD. In that regard, we need to have someone work with him on focus, cause we need him to FOCUS on the issues and the holes in our team's roster.

Your position-by-position analyses are pretty good. Ultimately, though, it boils down to how the units function as a whole and how they complement one another. My personal opinion is that the offense will be more dangerous (and to the opponent and not us to cut-off the inevitable jokes). We have a QB who can extend plays and guards who appear to be more athletic and the end result is that there should be more running lanes and more frequently open receivers. It should be an offense that puts more pressure on the defense than last years'.

On defense, I too wish we picked up more linemen and edges. I am not sure how much we would actually play a space-eating NG type; this DC likes athletic, penetrating DTs and keeps the DLs and LBs fresh by rotating snaps almost equally between the top two guys at each position. A NG would be more of a situational player in his defense. I think, though, that the LB corp is significantly improved and that we will have some organic growth from, guys gaining a year of physical maturity plus a more disruptive defensive scheme. I believe the defense will be better than last year's overall, with more depth at LOS ( considering organic growth).

Hard to see how that translates into wins and losses. We have a tougher schedule (although we don't yet know the game order).
