I agree with most of this post, except the David Bailey portion - he was most definitely a hot commodity (top 15 player in the portal). He entered in the Spring, IIRC.

He was a hot commodity that had no interest in going to Texas Tech until they put a number in front of his agent that made him become interested in Texas Tech. That was the point of the comment I made - apologize if it wasn’t clear in how I laid it out

I’m disappointed in what appears to me as Nebraska either A) refusing to play the game or B) not able to play the game properly when it comes to player acquisition over the past few years, not just this current.

Nebraska calls itself a blue blood, says they have the best fan base in America and acquires talent at a Kansas St level.

The excuse of “well they have more money” or “well they are the hot team right now” shouldn’t be acceptable. Does Nebraska want to compete or not? You can not compete with this type of talent acquisiton.
Based on results were the equivalent of the Cubs. Top overall revenue, best fan base that travels that you could ask for, best facilities. Poor AD historically, poor investment and selection of coaches, to soft and tight following the rules handicaps the program.

Look back at when TO took over as interim AD. He said coaching salaries where to high and selected a cheap option in Pelini vs the best we could get. It’s been fuck up after fuck up with the same crowd running the show for decades. It’s a cash cow money maker that is halfa$$ed in a number of areas.

It’s clear we just need to do that to get things halfway back in order. Boosters aren’t on board and when they do begrudgingly raise their commitment levels those have already been surpassed three years prior.

why not follow Campbell to Penn State? That’s the only potential red flag I see.

Do you know who Penn State has coming back at OG? They had a pretty good OL, IDK, but they may already have their starters at OG.

Seems to me Nebraska is stuck between wanting to be Cockeye or Texas Tech and isn’t good at either
I get it, Tech has the Double Eagle guys footing the bill.

But Tech recognized that they aren’t in a desirable location and overpaid guys to get there. McGuire isn’t some great mastermind. They just built him a roster.

Nebraska is building a roster like Cockeye and Minnesota and then getting out coached by Ferentz and Fleck.

Being outbid for a guy you really want means (to me, at least) that you simply do not have the funds to bid more. I.e., the guy is worth what the other party is bidding but you can't match or beat the offer.

Guys getting priced out to me means that you think you're better off getting someone else for less -- you decide not to pay the higher price because you think you won't get adequate return on the higher price (and, of course, you're trying to optimize the total return).

Yeah, I don’t know where the hell this idea came from that “having the necessary resources” meant you’d never get outbid? That’s fucking ridiculous. OSU, Oregon, TT etc… Nobody is gonna get their 1st choice at every position they’re recruiting.

And yes, “missing” on a guy doesn’t always mean you got outbid. Sometimes another school is willing to pay more than you think the player worth, sometimes a lot more. That’s not being outbid, that’s passing on what you see as a bad business decision.

I’ve been consistent in saying Rhule better step it up in the portal if he has the resources. But we’re talking about a top 15-20 class, something better than that will be a bonus and I’ll be over the moon. But to think you have to sign a top 3 rated prospect at every position (who may not even really be a top 3 player at his position) or this thing is a failure are just… dumb. You can sign a top 10 portal class without even signing one top 5 player at their respective position.

Now I’m sure someone will think I just said we’re gonna sign a top 10 class… lol

People like to say things like “well the guys have to be interested in the first place or the money doesn’t matter!”

Then you learn about the Texas Tech situation with David Bailey where he had zero interest when he entered the portal in going to TTU (wasn’t even on his radar) until they gave his agent a number he couldn’t ignore and magically he visits and is a Red Raider

Meanwhile we’re playing money ball to not “overpay” guys when we just lost 3 straight games to end the year by 3+ TDs each. Sounds like we might have to “overpay” some guys in spots that we desperately need fellas!
YES!!!
