The Happy Ending Society

I had some personal stuff pop up a few months back and told Garrett that I needed to step away from the board for awhile. But, over the last few weeks, I began lurking a bit again. This seems as good of a time as any to make my return.

My brothers, this wasn’t the ending. It was only a page.

What we witnessed this year—frustrations included—was still forward motion. The program took real steps in the right direction. Maybe not the big, crowd-pleasing strides we dreamed of back in August, but steps all the same. A foundation strengthened. A culture clarified. Young players grew. Mistakes became lessons instead of habits. Trajectory matters, and ours is inching upward.

The Happy Ending Society exists for times exactly like this. Not to ignore reality, but to remind ourselves and others that a journey is defined by its direction, not by a single stumble. The road back to joy isn’t always a straight line, but those who stay on it long enough eventually get where they’re going.

So take heart. The story continues. The next chapter is unwritten, and happiness still awaits those who persevere long enough to see it.

And we will.

Onward, friends. The Happy Ending is still out there...
Welcome back.

For my mental health, I always drop-off on the coach bandwagon late. That doesn't mean I dont see issues, but I just cant fathom sitting around bitching about not firing the coach for likely 24 months.

When I jumped off the coaches bandwagon

Solich - caught off guard he was fired, didnt even really consider it was a possibility in 2003
Callahan - Somewhere around Okie St /A&M in 2007
Pelini - Wisconsin Big Ten Title was first inking, 2014 Wisconsin Final nail that it had to be done
Riley - 2017 Northern Illinois. I was most skeptical of this one.
Frost - I was surprised he wasnt fired after 2021, but thought giving 2022 just to be sure wasn't the worst idea

So with that full disclosure.

1. Utah game - It went pretty much exactly how we all expected. Sure, it was frustrating to watch, but I didnt get too riled up because that is exactly what I thought would happen. Due to the lack of Big 12 teams in the playoff, Pac 12 Bowl Tie-ins, and our fanbases reputation for travel, we were way 'overseeded' in the bowl match. Our conference 7-5 peers were playing New Mexico and Central Michigan Frustrating game, but I dont understand get all bent out of shape.

2. 2025 season comes down to 2 things. Raiola Injury and Last Portal seasons roster management.

A. Raiola got hurt. I dont know why everyone seemingly ignores this. Its a clear line in the sand. Nebraska is 6-2 leading USC int he 3rd quarter on a likely scoring drive to go up 2 scores and he breaks his leg. Nebraska then finishes 1-4 down the stretch. That's pretty much what I anticipated what would happen when he went down. Is this coaching or the football gods just kicking us in the nuts?

B. People want to blame coaching on defense, btu to me the real issue was roster management. He obviously miscalculated and thought he had the horses on the defensive line and Linebacker and didnt even attempt to go after marquee guys. (Or didnt have the money). That is a major miscalculation that ultimately defined our season. He cant do this again.

In conclusion, the hall glass full version. Rhule needs to get his work done in the portal this year. No more projecting, no more question marks. If you aren't 95% confident in position group you need to upgrade it in the portal. There is no reason to be unsure in todays college football. Go spend money. That starts with getting a QB,

HES isn’t about being blind to poor performance, questionable hires, roster management, or anything else for that matter.

For me it’s really about having control over my emotions and not being an emotionally feeble person who isnt able to have a balanced approach to what we see and experience.

It’s about having a reality based mindset that recognizes the nuances of supporting a college sports program. Understanding that, yes I want to win every football game convincingly, want the program to be CFP relevant every year, and also recognizing that’s not where we are AND I’m not going to base my emotional sanity and well being on it either.

You don’t have to like some of the outcomes to also appreciate other outcomes.

You don’t have to be excited about current status and act the fool, crash out, and generally not be able to control your emotional state of being.

While very frustrating at times, I choose to have a mindset that looks for the positive even when there may be small doses of it.

The angry, crash out, everything and everyone is dog shit, I know better than everyone who’s ever been at the helm of UNL athletics mentality peeps…As miserable as that may be…you do you.

Well put. You do a much better job at keeping emotions in check than I do. But I like to think, I’ve gotten better over time.

I try to find the positives in every game. It certainly feels better than dwelling on the negative.

I’m not saying the fire doesn’t burn bright at times, because it does…just choose to stay rational on everything.

Nobody from the top down wants 7-5. I can’t seem to wrap my head around what acting the crash out fool and generally being an ass on a message board does to change it.

That being said, I do enjoy watching many members show who they really are. People act much differently in person than places like this. You tend to get who they really are when masked behind the avatar. Always fun to observe.
