Very true. I do appreciate that.Hoiberg is completely the opposite. Team gets punched in the face and he keeps his cool

He still hasn’t led us to a big dance win.
Okay, if you want to be pedantic about it. In practice there are likely always going to be plenty of high quality transfers available.
The list of coaches who were .500 after 3 seasons and ended up competing for conference championships is basically nonexistent, so unless you’re happy with 8-9 win seasons max we might as well fire him and try again with the next guy. There are plenty of people who still want Fred fired because of how his tenure started at NU. He didn’t win right away, so in their minds nothing he’s doing now matters — he failed, end of story. Just wait until they drop their first game, and the vultures will be circling again.
Which brings me to Rhule… what exactly do the “this isn’t going to work” guys want done? I’m not seeing many actual solutions, just the assumption that his tenure is doomed no matter what. So what’s the plan — fire him now? Fire him next year even if he wins 6–7 games and currently has the #5 recruiting class in 2027? Blow it all up and start over again? Or maybe, just maybe, show a little patience and see how the thing progresses.
I’m not thrilled with how this year ended, but I’m also not melting down over it once DR went down. Next year could fall apart and Rhule could get fired — fair enough, he’d earn that if things truly cratered. But maybe showing a little patience for a guy who just delivered back-to-back bowl seasons for the first time in a decade isn’t the worst idea.
Let’s see how the portal shakes out and how that 2027 class continues to develop before we toss everything in the trash and start from scratch yet again.
The fire Rhule guys have said it out loud in multiple threads. Fire him now, don’t wait, and keep going with the three year cycle until we find the lightning in a bottle winner. There are plenty of people who still want Fred fired because of how his tenure started at NU. I bet he survives a losing season in 2026 unless we are getting blown out regularly.
For the most part I don’t disagree. After three years, you can generally tell what the trajectory is.The list of coaches who were .500 after 3 seasons and ended up competing for conference championships is basically nonexistent, so unless you’re happy with 8-9 win seasons max we might as well fire him and try again with the next guy.
This thought that we should keep mediocre coaches because we need stability is absurd. Coaches don’t just magically start winning.
I guess it depends on the people with money really think. I assume they had to sign off on that stupid extension. If we have 4-5 blowouts I could see him getting fired, but if we are a 4-5 win team and and play most teams tough I don’t see it. I think it comes down to 2027 with milestones he has to meet or he is gone. Not so sure. He’s going to get a lot of shit for 7-5 with how we finished.
Can’t speak for him of course, but he outlined: if we are happy with 8-9 win seasons, we should fire Rhule now…so I guess 10+ every year. Will be interested to see what/if he responds. For the most part I don’t disagree. After three years, you can generally tell what the trajectory is.
I’m curious — what number of wins were needed this year for you to feel like Rhule was the guy?
in 2025 there are basically 2 models:There are plenty of people who still want Fred fired because of how his tenure started at NU. Eh 5 wins in year 1, 6 wins in year 2, I think 8-9 in year 3 and you really could’ve sold that as progress. Instead we get a weak team that can’t tackle, can’t rush the passer, can’t stop the run, can’t pass block, can’t really do much above average in year 3.For the most part I don’t disagree. After three years, you can generally tell what the trajectory is.

Expanding the playoffs would be the worst thing ever idgaf who our coach is if that happens.in 2025 there are basically 2 models:
1. Hire and fire until you strike gold
2. Keep a decent but not exceptional coach around for an extended tenure in the hopes of being slightly above average, with the belief that you can trade not having disaster seasons for foregoing the chance to be elite.
Number 2 could become a better model if they expand the playoffs. I can definitely see a Matt Rhule team making it into a 24 or 28 team field. But it seems very unlikely that he is ever making it in the current format.
Rhule’s trajectory is a coach who hovers around .500. Probably 6-7 wins most seasons with an occasional 8-9 win season. If that’s what you signed up for than I guess we should just keep Rhule. Can’t speak for him of course, but he outlined: if we are happy with 8-9 win seasons, we should fire Rhule now…so I guess 10+ every year. Well you moved the goal posts there with this post and it isn’t what you said in your first post, but got it. I understand you know.Rhule’s trajectory is a coach who hovers around .500. Fuckin Northerstern hired there interim and through 3 years he has the same record in the Big 10 as Rhule.

Those who don’t get mesmerized by Rhule behind a mic are ready for the next guy.
I said a max of 8-9 wins? How does that not fit with winning 6-7 with an occasional 8-9 win season? Goal posts don’t seem to have moved to me?Well you moved the goal posts there with this post and it isn’t what you said in your first post, but got it. I understand you know.
