That's a personnel issue, not a scheme issue.

Unfortunately for us there is no scheme that is based on having small linemen.

A lot of the teams that have adopted the 3-3-5 did it because they couldn’t legitimately fill a four man front, but you’re not wrong.

All defensive fronts operate at a higher level with at least one immovable object in the mix.

People want to shit on JoBu but he had nothing to do with the piss poor personnel he inherited. As you said, there is no successful scheme taylor made for bitch ass d-line that pushed around like little school girls.

Once again, let’s see what he does with a legit P4 d-line. If they still get pushed around then we have a legitimate cause to discuss scheme, technique and/or motivation coming from Butler.

If Butler had the freedom to choose any scheme, what do you guys suspect he would run? Would he stick with the 3-3-5? He runs a lot of 4-2. We do a lot of things but haven’t been good at anything. Is Rhule dictating what he is doing? The best coaches I know have a system they believe in, can coach, and do it well.

This brings up bad memories of Pelini's run defense getting gashed and he'd just say "we weren't in our run fits. This is fixable."

Thank God! I am so relieved! Here I was just thinking we were getting our asses kicked, but if the LB just isn't filling the gap and we need to tell him to do so, then we should win the 2014 national championship.

The defensive line is either asked to make plays or occupy blockers to protect the LB’s so they can make plays. Anything a D lineman does in a 3 man front over and above that is gravy, and that’s all we’ve asked of our lines since the switch. This year (and in Chinanders worst years in the 3-4) we didn’t do that. Run fits be damned, you can’t simply ‘adjust’ a defense to allow for your front being used as blocking sleds. LB’s are supposed to line up at a certain depth behind the LOS, react to certain reads and adjust accordingly. Hard to do when you’re trying to dodge your Nose Tackle.

This is 100% a personnel issue and can’t be fixed by any coordinator. Many of Bo’s issues in the run game were schematic due to his hyper aggressive desire to shut down the passing game. We’d frequently be motioned out of position (or into a better position for the offense to take advantage of) or have areas cleared out by TE’s and Receivers used as decoys, leaving big running lanes.

Without a human eraser like Suh or at the next level Lavonte David or to a lesser extent JoJo Domann, you’re going to get physically beat or schemed out of position and teams will bust a play. In the case of Saturday night, it was a simple physical beating for four quarters.

He’s most familiar with four man fronts, but he’s obviously aware enough of what he’s got on the roster to not make a move he can’t support with personnel. I know the run defense results lead everyone to believe we’re running the wrong defense, but we have little in the way of experienced, physically matured defensive lineman to run anything at this point.

That’s not a knock on the kids on the roster. I really, really like a lot of these guys and think we’re going to be in good shape in ’26 or ’27. That doesn’t do much for us on a November Saturday night in 2025.

- roster improvement (physicality, size, being harder to block)

I said before the season.... in at least 5 threads...we are really gonna miss those two DLs that got drafted.

FUCK... sometimes I HATE being RIGHT all the time.
