Finally got to rewatch the game

You know what we need to learn how to take the W and be happy with it. Was it the best game? No. But god damn it we won the fucking game. Judging by the comments in this thread and a couple others we lost by double digits ffs people

Amen... Cockeye wins 10 games a year like that and is more than happy about it. We could win 10 games like that and our fans would bitch that was great but we should have won those games by more.

What assistant do we need to upgrade now
Bartel seems like an easy one. Not seeing great coaching there and RB coaches tend to be ace recruiters.

Will be interesting to see what Satt’s salary is after his last year of OC pay. If he lands some top cruits this cycle then maybe he’s a keep. If he can’t then bring someone else in.

Our LBer coach is a potential future star. The LBer room is pretty underwhelming rn to me. Hopefully he can have a great class this year and next. We’re going to be back to the portal for key spots again after this season.

I think it was RJ and Gabe that went down in 2023, right? I guess the point is that he ended up establishing himself as a better player than both them anyway (partly due to the opportunity from the injuries). The point is that there could be guys down the depth chart ready to emerge.
There for sure could be... I would just say it's better to have some established options. I brought up that heading into 2024 we had tons of guys with carrying experience such as EJ, Rahmir, Ervin Jr, brought in Dowdell who actually carried the ball some at Oregon. In 2025 we didn't have 10 carries total behind EJ. While freshmen can move up, these aren't 5 star Aaron Green or 4 star Braylon Heard. It's a walk-on and a guy we moved from WR in the spring.

We will be fine, they will look a ton better these next two weeks. But I am extremely concerned if Ives, Nelson, or Mozee have to be our RB1 compared to if we chose from Dowdell, EJ, RJohnson, or Ervin Jr the year prior. I'm more shocked we didn't go grab someone in the portal.

Are you saying if we go 10-2 in 2025 people will be bitching? Not sure I'd agree on that.

I haven't looked at some other posts that may not have been directed at me, but my original post in this thread probably isn't any different than what our coaches know we need to improve on these next 2 weeks. There's also some things that looked really good such as our DBs, our QB taking what was there for him, etc.

Not sure it totally fits in this thread but want to drop it somewhere.

Just for some perspective on how hard it is to win in CFB - the current longest active win streak in the country is 5 games (yes this is slightly skewed by the CFP resulting in top teams incurring losses at the end of each year but the point remains).

Hell, Alabama is 4-5 in their last 9 games against FBS teams.

Winning is hard. There are definitely things we can/should/will improve upon but they found a way to win on Thursday which is a huge step in the right direction

Wasn't directed at you. Yes, I do believe that our fan base would find something to bitch about even if we won 10 games... Walking out of the stadium Thursday night, I was amazed by the amount of folks bitching about winning that game. I finally turned around to one guy and said, "Enjoy the fucking win tonight. 10 times out of 10, we would have lost that game over the last 15 years. There will be plenty of time to bitch from tomorrow on, but just enjoy the damn win tonight!".

Yeah, but the difference is that we don't have anyone on the roster with ability to step up this year. Nelson and Ives are not p4 backs, Mozee is a WR. Haven't followed closely enough this off-season to know what's going on with Booth or Parker, but would be difficult for them to contribute as tfr
Everyone was saying this about EJ at this time two years ago.

Man it's like the PFF Guys had this place bugged. This popped up on my YouTube feed just as I was reading this thread. Here's some bullet points for you TLDR folks:

PFF CFB Show: Nebraska-Cincinnati review notes:
  • this came confused the hell out of me. even after watching it a 2nd time
  • If you told me beforehand a team was winning with 40 min TOP, dink & dunk passing - i would have told you that was UC winning
  • Nebraska played keep away, that was what i was expecting UC to do
  • this was a bizarro version of each team
  • i though Nebraska was overly conservative in this game (DR depth of target 4.3 yds)
  • let Raiola stand in the pocket and take some shots
  • i thought NU could have attacked more. Key looked great, Hunter looked great, EJ looked great. but they never did
  • i come out of this game feeling like Nebraska should have won by more
  • and i don't know what Nebraska's offensive identity is
  • for Cincinnati, this was a copy of their last 8 games
  • all of their games are going to look like this because UC can't push the ball downfield
  • UC needed to be the TOP team to win this
  • Sorsby 2.6 yds per pass
  • final interception: NU did a great job of showing Cover 1 and rotating to Cover 2. they fooled Sorsby
  • UC should not throw unless it's 3rd and long
  • Nebraska's secondary was spectacular - they were the best unit of the night, both teams. it was lights out on the outside
  • NU coverage grade: 89.4. that was their best rating ever since 2014 when we started PFF scoring. (tied vs Purdue 2014). tied the best coverage rating ever.
  • Nebraska's offensive leadership, including DH, needs to figure out what their identity is. felt like they were just running random plays
  • the next 2 weeks i want to really see them figure it out
  • they will not beat Michigan without a set plan and way to sequence their offense
  • i want to see this NU offense get aggressive. they're not going to be in the CFP discussion if they're not
  • good on Nebraska for winning the type of game they normally lost under Scott Frost
  • they may have 3-4 more of these types of games this season

Pretty spot on. Not sure I agree with his assessment of Holgo’s play sequencing. I think our inability to run the ball as well as we thought we could probably disrupted his sequencing a bit. But I think if we get just a little better execution from the O-line and his play calling will look more deliberate and strategic. IMO

I still feel sorry for Haarberg. He should have been moved to TE years ago - he'd have a lot more experience at the job at this point, especially for blocking. Keeping him at QB for so long ultimately hurt both him and us.

That’s a tough one when a kid really thinks they can be a QB. Took the McCaffrey kid 3 different schools to be convinced he was WR. Which is exactly what the 1st school told him. Adults around these kids have to do what’s right and not what’s easy. Tell the kid the truth… “you’re not a D1 quarterback.” And even then some kids don’t have any adults around them (coaches included) that know what a D1 quarterback looks like. They might be well intended but they just don’t have perspective or knowledge to give good advice.

Really falls on Frost. (once again) He should’ve done a better job recruiting a healthy QB room. When you only have 1 legitimate D1 caliber QB in your entire room, it’s easier to justify keeping a project(s) at QB. Frost was willing to tell McCaffrey “you’re not a QB.” By all accounts he wasn’t willing to do the same Haarberg. 🤷‍♂️

I don't ever think I've seen someone say that about EJ, but maybe I just missed it.
Maybe not, but there were a lot of people who saw EJ as a reach offer who Minnesota didn't even offer and never thought he'd be a factor here. I don't think @HCFord1's sentinemt is very far off at all.

People have been shitting all over EJ from day one. Still are TBH. From what I can tell they are down on him not for who he is as a player but because he isn't a first round draft pick. He is pretty good. No he isn't elite but he's better than average by a good amount. We'd be beyond fucked if he wasn't out there missing holes and being a shitty RB.

We had a one score win... that's another positive.

These next 2 weeks are all about figuring out how we can shift from the DC White defense, and shift from RVP/Jeudy trying to be Robinson/Nash and stopping Michigan's run. I believe in Holgo to get the offense right.

Isn't this what spring ball and fall camp installs are for? We are just now realizing Jeudy and RVP can't be Nash and TY? Seems a little sus.

I think they tried it against second and third string and it looked good. Week 1 is to see what you look like against another opponent. Remember, we moved a WR to RB after spring ball and he's our #2. You really don't know what you have until the bullets are flying.
