NBA Discussion

Home court has been losing some of it's advantage for about 20 years now. Save for 2020 when it obviously wouldn't matter and a couple of other outlier years, home court is just not as important as it used to be. Still important, but not as much.

Dude it makes NO sense
They won 16 games in April may and June. That’s how they won a title. It’s really not that hard to understand. Tatum is a top 10 player in the league, Brown is top 20, porzingis is a match up nightmare. Jrue one of the most unselfish players in the league and an elite defender, Al is still a serviceable big, Derrick white elite 3&D, Pritchard 6th man of the year this year. Pretty easy to see

They shoot too many 3's. Win by em, lose by em.

But they had the 3 previous years of DEEP playoff runs. 2022 finals (lost), 2023 ECF (lost in 7). 2024 Finals run (won the bling).

Horford is old (still really good for his age for sure). JRue is a good bit beyond his prime now. Porzingis still has a long-running virus issue (since January maybe), and he is injury prone.

They have a very good collection of players. Two elite wings, good bench, lots of good shooters, very good overall defense. But this is year 4 of another playoffs, with the 3 previous years of very deep playoff runs.

I am hearing if they drop this Knicks series, which is looking likely, that they will look to make some roster moves (no idea on their cap situation or moveable players/cap space). Won't be surprising if they flame out like this, and given a couple of their key guys are past their prime, that they look to make some changes.

The Knicks have played some incredible 2nd half of games of ball these last two games, and the Celtics look like a worn down team in year 4 of deep playoff runs with some aging players. It's why repeating is so hard anymore. There is more overall parity (talent) in the league, and we just don't see these repeat (or 3 peat) Bling teams like we did in the past (Lakers, GSW). And home court just isn't quite as important as it used to be (probably because there is more overall talent across teams in the league).

Agreed on all fronts…

And they have still lost by a total of 2 points in 2 games. I think this series goes 7

Hahaha Nico is redeemed by the Silver giving him Cooper Flagg! Funniest scenario would be if Nico traded the number one pick away for like Giannis or Luka. Or just some trash role players.

Even all my coworkers who are life long Mavs fans are saying this was rigged.

Tatum likely snapped his achilles. That's a year to get back, then who knows at what % of what he was (KD came back pretty close to the same for instance). Sucks to see. Knicks have been so tough and clutch this series, but losing Tatum for not only the game, series, but probably almost a year - Celtics are already in a bad cap situation. Now that this series is probably over, wonder if they make a ton of roster changes. JRue and Horford are both past prime, Horford about done. And likely no Tatum for the better part of a year.

If it’s what it looked like, they probably blow it up. No reason to be a second apron team at that point.

Explains the terrrrible trade…kinda

Thing is - a true blow-up is getting rid of all but young talent. They still have Brown, not that he has been as good this year. I think he and Tatum are 27ish in age, so not "old". I think they try to move parts to punt on the year and hope to improve for the season after, when they hope Tatum would be back close to normal. Just not an ideal situation with a bad cap situation. They were already in trouble cap wise.

Not connected.... except people will think the League wanted another #1 pick star on the team in the 4th largest market in the league.

Luka trade was really because of new ownership - who are asshats. Luka hated the new ownership, was very close to Cuban who now had no say. The relationship between Luka and the Mavs had gotten toxic, he wanted out. But the Mavs didn't want an open bidding war and went with a top 5 Big with no looking elsewhere.

Luka does need to shore up his conditioning - that part is real. And was an issue the Mavs were frustrated with. Harrison took the bullet for what was really mostly new ownership who made the decision. Nico is already wealthy, and getting paid to take those bullets. Just an odd, unique, situation that isn't likely to happen again.

Not buying that. Even if you hated Luka…they could have eaaasily got more back for him. It’s about keeping the lakers relevant after LeBron retires…or the leagues overall ratings are horrible and it needed a change up. I like watching some NBA games, it can be really good ball but this is the 💩 where i totally understand why people say they aren’t interested.

1.8% chance for Dallas to get the number one pick.

I do agree with the skepticism on the Mavs getting the #1, which will be Flagg, of course. Not even a 2% chance. Huh.

But the rest of it on the Luka trade is how is went down. This was new ownership decision level, on the decision to trade him firstly, and then how to excute it, secondly. Nico had a little say, but not much. Since he was buddies with Lakers GM Pelinka AND Lakers head owner Jeannie Buss is longtime close friends with Doncic's agent, Bill Duffy, all those relationship parts helped a lot. BTW, Duffy is known to do things on the sly for either teams or his clients (usually mutually beneficial to his client and team he is doing a solid for), call them favors if you will. But Doncic did want out, he hated the new Mavs ownership (rightully so). Mavs were frustrated with Doncic's poor conditioning habits.

Not saying it was the right decision by the Mavs and how they handled it, but it is what they did and why they did it. New ownership are really asshats.

I enjoy watching the NBA a lot, but there have been some fishy lottery happenings
(‘85 Ewing to the Knicks
‘03 Lebron to Cleveland
‘11 Kyrie to Cleveland
‘08 Rose to Chicago
‘12 and ‘19 both NOLA).

You seem to have a little more faith in the league, which is great! But it looks kinda fishy when you trade away your star (to the biggest brand in the league and considered to be an horrible trade) and get your 1.8% shot to land another big replacement to hit. And for the 4th (soon to be the 3rd) largest market. 4th worst odds to get the number one of all time.

NBA probably needs to do something about the lottery. There’s just not easy a solution. The other NBA problem is that this night and story will get more traction than 90% of the regular season.

Yeah, definitely a tricky situation. Jrue is going to be 35 and KP is basically playing half his games right now (and going into a contract year). Not a bad time to take advantage of the random window and make a move.

I don't disagree about the league, really. I think they do shady things at times. It is a product for them, and of course they want to maximize that product. Do I think lottery balls have been tampered with before? Yeah, probably. Do I think that the league gifted the Mavs the #1 pick? Wouldn't surprise me. Good luck proving it, though. Someone would have to squeal, and likely if there is shady shit going on like this, only a select few would know.

Even those close to NBA orgs (GM's, owners, etc) and high up - don't really know, but they have similar suspicions. Multi, multi billion dollar business and product. Shady shit goes down in all businesses at those high $ levels.

You think they wouldn’t have given a generational white boy to the Jazz?
