Thankfully my Dad was never like that. I don't recall too many Dad's of players I played with that were. Now, the Softball Dads (my sister played select softball), that was whole different situation. Those guys were constantly yelling at their girls.
Unfortunately my step son has no athletic ability at all and really no interest in sports. He did ask to play baseball in 7th grade (I think because he knew how much it meant to me). It sucked that my first instinct was to say that if you hadn't played before 7th grade, that your opportunity had passed. I ended up finding a recreational league for him. Of course, they ended up not having a coach, so I had to step in to coach. I told him on day 1, "If you ask me after a game, how I thought you did, I'm going to ask you if you want me to answer as Dad or as Coach. If you are asking me as Dad, I'm going to ask you if you had fun, and if you did, then that was great. If you're asking me as Coach, then I'm probably going to give you some constructive criticism". It's up to you".
He always responded that he was asking me as Dad. That team was full of horrible ball players that made the Bad News Bears look like World Series Champions, but I ended up trying to make it as fun as possible for them. Drove me crazy at times, but you have to find the fun in things... I remember one time the RF overthrew the 2B, and the runner went to 3rd, while the RF grabbed the ball and threw it over the 3B head, allowing the runner to score. I yelled, "Boys, it's too hot for a snowball fight". They all started laughing and thought it was the funniest thing in the world. At that point, all I could do was laugh with them.
