Nebraska offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen

***Holgorsen said practices had been “pretty physical” this week, including some third-and-short work for the first time this spring on Thursday. They’ll continue to do more full-team stuff with three groups through the spring.

***Holgorsen said the offensive line “got yelled at a lot today. You can tell that it’s practice nine.” The Huskers had a couple of guys out with a stomach bug this week, and the o-line was starting to feel the physical grind of spring.

He said it got to the point where he wondered if NU would scrap the third group due to limited offensive line numbers, but they made it through as scheduled.

***Holgorsen said the wide receivers were “a work in progress, too.” The talent is there, but the new and young guys are still learning the offense and their expectations at Nebraska.

“It’s starting to make sense to those guys who have logged reps, and the young guys are still plugging away.”

***Holgorsen said Emmett Johnson was “playing well.” As for the rest of the running backs, it was a talented group that still “needs to come on.” He said they will need at least three backs ready to play in games by the fall.

***With Kwinten Ives, Holgorsen said physicality and running with the right pad level were things he was working on. His touchdown in the Pinstripe Bowl had “carried over” into winter workouts and spring ball.

Holgorsen is high on NU’s young receivers

***Holgorsen said Nyziah Hunter was strong and “plays physical.” He’s got good speed and has beaten a DB on a go-route this spring. But his physicality will be a separator for him in the Big Ten.

***Holgorsen said Cortez Mills and Isaiah Mozee would “contribute” in the fall. He said those two had probably the highest success rate in one-on-one drills. They need to improve their strength, but their body control and feel for the game were excellent.

“They’re two very talented young kids that will play this year.”

***At center, Holgorsen said he’d been “very happy” with Justin Evans. He still must improve his snapping – “which isn’t surprising” – but Evans had really grown as a leader on the offensive line and the team. Holgorsen told Evans he could be “as good as a center as there is in college football. I truly believe that.”

***With the portal opening soon, Holgorsen said he had no clue what that would look like for Nebraska. All he knew was that everyone was “getting a ton of reps” and was treated as well as any players in the country.

***Holgorsen said Nebraska using GoPro footage from practice was something he first saw used at TCU. “It’s 100% for communication.” Coaches can hear what the QBs are saying in the huddle, at the line, and after the play to know what they do and don’t understand.

“It really holds the quarterbacks accountable for what they’re saying… It really gives coaches all the answers for what’s being said out there.”

***Holgorsen said Luke Lindenmeyer was “just a football player, man.” He said Lindenmeyer was taking on a leadership role with his voice and his play on the field. “He sees the whole field and knows what’s going on with every play.”

Running backs coach EJ Barthel

***Barthel said Ives’s development since last season had him on track to meet his potential. He’s more comfortable and confident now. “This is the best I’ve ever seen him.”

***Barthel said that type of development was a “natural progression,” even in the instant gratification world of the transfer portal era. “I think everything is really on course for him… I’m really impressed with where he’s at.”

***Barthel said Ives was around 215 pounds right now. Nebraska likes him anywhere from 208-218 because he hasn’t lost any speed with the added weight.

***Barthel said December was huge for Ives with his added workload during bowl practices, which carried over into this play this spring. Ives is a 215-pound back who can run routes.

***Barthel said Jamarion Parker was still out with an injury, though it was “nothing major.” He said Parker had “natural instincts” and “really understands the run game.”

***On Conor Booth, Barthel said, “The kid belongs here. There’s no doubt… We’re really happy with where he’s at.”

***Barthel said Emmett Johnson had “made strides at almost every opportunity every offseason.” Johnson has improved in every area, from technique to protection to making more explosive plays since his arrival. “He’s really at the top of his game right now. He’s literally what we stand for as a program.”

Barthel said Johnson could “be one of the best backs in the conference.”

***On NU’s short-yardage running game, Barthel said Ives had “a really good day” there on Thursday. He thinks all the backs can do it. Janiran Bonner will also factor in there this season.

Wide receiver Nyzaiah Hunter

***Hunter said he chose Nebraska because of the fans, the facilities, the coaches, and the “brand” of the program.

***Hunter said Nebraska’s mat drills were “crazy” and unlike anything he’d experienced. But he felt those prepared him for spring. They set the standard for what’s expected under Matt Rhule.

***Hunter said redshirting at Cal was tough, but it helped him learn the game and understand what it takes to succeed at this level.

***On Dylan Raiola, Hutner said: “He’s a dog… He’s got a dog mindset and a will to win.” In fact, Hunter said he already planned to invite Raiola to his wedding (though he’s not getting married any time soon).

Raiola was the first person – from any school – to text him when he hit the portal. That relationship has grown ever since. “I felt the love.”

***Hunter said you’d never know Mills and Mozee were only freshmen. They were still learning, but their talent was “phenomenal.”

Wide receiver Janiran Bonner

***Bonner said he was “pretty comfortable” as a full-time wide receiver, but he was still willing to do whatever Nebraska needed of him. “If you put me in any environment or situation, I can handle it.”

***Bonner said there was “a lot of talent” in Nebraska’s receiver room. He said the best part about the room was that everyone could learn from each other, even older guys learning from the younger players.

***Bonner said Nebraska’s offense could “do whatever we want to do.”

***Bonner said perimeter blocking had been an emphasis this offseason, and he’d seen good progress there so far. He thought many of the issues last year concerned timing and execution.

***Bonner said Raiola was “getting even more comfortable… I love that about him.”

***Bonner said he’s down to around 220 pounds from 225 last season. He said he’d probably stay around 220 this season.

Am I the only one who the more you hear him talk the more you like Holgorsen? The dude is just flat out hilarious and I love his zero fucks given attitude.
Definitely. I was thinking the same thing. Becoming a huge fan of his. No bullshit and funny as hell.

He really seems to be having fun and is truly happy to be here.

He’s the perfect compliment to Rhule as a person, coach, public speaker, etc. That’s not a knock on Rhule, either. It’s something he needed. Shows a lot about his desire to win, his confidence, and his leadership.

Mikai Gbayor already looking for a new team again...
