Nebraska’s first full scrimmage of fall camp was dominated by the defense, Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule said Saturday.

The Huskers scrimmaged for three hours inside Memorial Stadium — with no injures, Rhule added — and the scorecard had Nebraska’s defense as the winners.

“Really a day dominated by the defense — I thought the defense was lights out. A lot of passion and energy and they’re significantly further ahead of the offense based on today,” Rhule said. “A lot of work to do on offense and in the kicking game.”

When ticking through a few of the offensive issues, Rhule mentioned procedural issues. Saturday’s scrimmage featured Big Ten officials and a play clock and Rhule said he liked to be able to get issues ironed out now instead of in the opener against Minnesota.

“A lot of trouble getting in and out of the huddle, a lot of procedural things,” Rhule said. “Which hopefully will be a good wakeup call for us to be better. We haven’t really had that in the spring — the first time we’ve that today.”

While Rhule said there is progress to be made on offense, he did give credit to his defensive group for making life difficult Saturday.

“We’ve got a lot of guys playing really well,” Rhule said. “We’re really deep on defense. We’ve got a lot of guys who have played a lot. Who’s the third JACK? I couldn’t tell you. That bodes well for us because we’re not going to be a defense that plays 11 guys. The goal is to play 17-25 guys depending on who is above the line. We’re going to try to throw waves at people. They’re talented on defense and they’re playing with some energy and aggressiveness, which I liked.”

As for the kicking game, Rhule said it was simple — his team has to make field goals. Freshman Tristan Alvano and veteran Timmy Bleekrode are currently battling for the open kicking job.

“Missed some field goals today — a little wind out there. We didn’t knock it through the way I’d like us to,” Rhule said. “Protection was good. We did some kickoffs and punts — those were all good. We’re going to be in the type of games where field goals are gonna matter and that was not at the level — at the percentage — we want it to be today.”

Rhule said he liked scrimmages like Saturday’s because of the teaching points it provides his players as well as getting them comfortable with what they may face in the coming season. Nebraska will scrimmage next Saturday — the NCAA allows only two true scrimmages in fall camp — before having a simulated game on the Thursday ahead of game week.

“I love days like today. I love chaos. I love making guys respond to adversity,” Rhule said. “We hit a long touchdown at the end, but (Luke) Reimer made a great pick in the red zone. I like seeing guys make plays at the end of the game. It was good for us to have that today on offense and as I told the defense, I hope the offense takes a step in the next scrimmage, but I don’t want the defense to relax. The defense needs to take a step. That’s what has to happen.”

What's the word on the waiver?

Nineteen days from Nebraska's opener against Minnesota, tight end Arik Gilbert has not had finalization regarding his status in obtaining a waiver to play this season for the Huskers.

"It's not finalized yet. I'm just going to be really disappointed if he doesn't get it," Husker head coach Matt Rhule said after Saturday's practice. "(He's) the most deserving young man. If he doesn't get it, they shouldn't even have the waiver. The NCAA should not even have the waiver if he doesn't get it. But there's a lot of parties involved. There's a lot of entities out there that don't always have people's best interest at heart."

Gilbert transferred for a second time in his college career this offseason, going from Georgia to Nebraska after initially starting his career at LSU.

Rhule couldn't comment on some of the specifics about who is backing Gilbert to be able to play right away, but it's believed he has support from the various places he's been to be awarded the waiver in his situation.

"Arik deserves (it) 100 percent in my opinion, my humble opinion. The great thing about me now is I've been through so much I don't care, I'll say what I think. If he doesn't get it, they should not have this waiver."

Rhule was asked a couple follow-ups about Gilbert. He could only say so much, but certainly said plenty about what he thinks.

"When you're behind the scenes, you see a lot. My job is to protect AG. He deserves this and shame on anyone who stands in the way or doesn't help."

The 6-5, 275-pound Gilbert was ranked No. 10 among all prospects nationally in the 2020 recruiting class and had 368 yards on 35 catches in 2020 with LSU in his first season. While he didn't play much at Georgia – with two catches for 16 yards last year – Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart was a vocal supporter of Gilbert finding his stride in all areas.

At Big Ten media days, Rhule spoke of the Huskers being there for Gilbert no matter what decisions are made about his eligibility. He technically still has three years to play if he could see the field in 2023.

“When we took Arik we said, ‘Listen, we’re here to help you. This is a long-term play for you. If you’re eligible, great. If you’re not eligible, we’ll help you, you’ll play another year," Rhule said. "Then if you want to play next year, great. I just want to help the kid.”
