Warning: Long

February signing day has passed and we now know (mostly) who will be added to the Nebraska roster for the 2022 season. Now let’s turn the page and start speculating about who we think will be leaving between now and the start of fall camp.

As it stands today, Nebraska sits at 90 scholarship players. I’m assuming we will add 3 more players from the portal (DL, OL, OLB/pass rusher) which would put us at 93. That means in the next 6 months we’ll see 8 players either transfer out or be taken off athletic scholarship.

Who will that be? Let’s take a look at the scholarship distribution by position (taken from RRS):

QB (5)
Casey Thompson - Jr
Logan Smothers - So
Heinrich Haarberg - RFr
Chubba Purdy - RFr
Richard Torres - Fr

RB (7)
Markese Stepp - Jr
Anthony Grant - Jr
Jaquez Yant - So
Rahmir Johnson - So
Gabe Ervin - RFr
Emmett Johnson - Fr
Ajay Allen - Fr

WR (10)

Omar Manning - Sr
Oliver Martin - Sr
Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda - Jr
Trey Palmer - Jr
Zavier Betts - So
Alante Brown - So
Latrell Neville - RFr
Shawn Hardy II - RFr
Kamonte Grimes - RFr
Will Nixon - RFr
De’Coldest Crawford - Fr
Victor Jones - Fr
Janiran Bonner - Fr

TE (6)

Travis Vokolek - Sr
Chris Hickman - So
AJ Rollins - RFr
Thomas Fidone - RFr
James Carnie - RFr
Chase Androff - Fr

OL (14)

Broc Bando - Sr
Trent Hixon - Sr
Kevin Williams - Jr
Nouri Nouili - Jr
Hunter Anthony - Jr
Teddy Prochazka - So
Ethan Piper - So
Michael Lynn - So
Turner Corcoran - So
Bryce Benhart - So
Brant Banks - So
Alex Conn - RFr
Henry Lutovsky - RFr
Justin Jenkins - Fr

DL (8)

Tate Wildeman - Jr
Casey Rogers - Jr

Ochaun Mathis - RJr
Ty Robinson - So
Mosai Newsom - So
Nash Hutmacher - So
Jailen Weaver - RFr
Ru’Quan Buckley - RFr
Marquis Black - RFr
Brodie Tagaloa - Fr

ILB (9)

Chris Kolarevic - Sr
Eva Mauga-Clements - Sr
Luke Reimer - Jr
Nick Henrich - So
Garrett Snodgrass - So
Seth Malcom - RFr
Randolph Kpai - RFr
Mikai Gbayor - RFr
Ernest Hausmann - Fr

OLB (7)

Damian Jackson - Sr
Pheldarious Payne - Sr

Caleb Tannor - Sr
Garrett Nelson - Jr
Javin Wright - So
Jimari Butler - RFr
Blaise Gunnerson - RFr
Jake Appleget - Fr
Gage Stenger - Fr

CB (10)

Omar Brown - Jr
Braxton Clark - Jr
Tyreke Johnson - Jr
Quinton Newsome - Jr
Marques Buford - So
Tommi Hill - So
Javier Morton - So
Tamon Lynum - RFr
Jaeden Gould - Fr
Malcolm Hartzog - Fr

S (6)

Myles Farmer - So
Noa Pola-Gates - So
Isaac Gifford - So
DaShon Singleton - So
Koby Bretz - RFr
Jalil Martin - Fr

ST (2)

Timmy Bleekrode - So
Brian Buschini - So

To start, I believe Damian Jackson, Trent Hixon, and Oliver Martin (not 100% on him) have been mentioned as walk-ons who have been given scholarships on an annual basis. I’m going to guess that none of them will have schollies renewed. That brings us to 90. So looking at the roster where do we see areas where transfers make sense?

1) QB - As many predict, I see Logan Smothers being the odd man out after spring ball.
2) RB - I just don’t see Markese Stepp having a role here moving forward. Not sure how it’ll work since he’s already transferred once, but I bet we figure it out.
3) WR - This room is crowded and it wouldn’t surprise me to see one of the RFr transfer out. My gut right now says Shawn Hardy II.
4) OL - Certainly some weight we could cut here. I’m looking at you Michael Lynn and Alex Conn.
5) DL - Does Tate Wildeman take a medical and call it a career?
6) CB - Names that stick out to me are Tamon Lynum and Tyreke Johnson.

It will be interesting to see how the staff continues to try and maximize the roster between now and fall camp. Personally, I think they’ve done a pretty good job in the last month or so through the portal and a late recruiting surge and, as described above, there are still multiple places where upgrades can be made.

I believe Javin Wright moved to S.

Here's just a quick run through of possible guys I think:

Tate Wildeman
Mosai Newsom - So

At least 2, maybe 3 out of this group:
Alante Brown - So
Latrell Neville - RFr
Shawn Hardy II - RFr
Kamonte Grimes - RFr
Will Nixon - RFr

At least 1 of these 2, possibly both:
Logan Smothers - So
Heinrich Haarberg - RFr

Ethan Piper - possibly move to defense
Michael Lynn
Alex Conn

Here is my list that I could see. Some of these I think will be asked to move on, and some I think move on because of the depth chart (Ramhir, Nixon and Clark).

Logan Smothers
Markese Stepp
Rahmir Johnson
Shawn Hardy II
Will Nixon
AJ Rollins
Michael Lynn
Alex Conn
Tate Wildeman
Eva Mauga-Clements
Braxton Clark

Take away Rahmir and EMC and I can agree with this list. Rahmir clearly has a role in this offense and I doubt he disappears enough to incite leaving. EMC is now one of the top 4 ILBs with Honas gone.

Would love for Nixon to stay as I still think hes a stud.

247 (I think Bruntz) caught Whipple and apparently Rahmir made an impression on him. I also imagine Whipple wanting to whip it around the yard will like Johnson a lot as a pass catcher.

EMC is shit or get off the pot time
Clark is in the mix for that starting CB spot, but I could see him moving on if he doesn't win out.
Otherwise your list is a lot of shit or get off the pot time

Nixon is one I really like but it is now or never.

I don't know why Smothers if they told him they were bringing in 2 kids why he wouldn't transfer then? What is the benefit of waiting till after spring? Maybe less in the portal, I don't know.

IMO one QB will leave as long as all of them get through spring healthy. (knock on wood) And I don't think Logan Smothers wants to go from 2nd string with his eyes on starting soon to 3rd string behind two new dudes. He will be a hot commodity in the portal for some offense that would use his legs first and then his arm in case of emergency. Goner #1

Noa Pola-Gates is my next candidate as it seems he is undersized for safety and has been recruited over. Goner #2.

Braxton Clark has had trouble with injuries and then didn't wow us last year when he did play. I think he'll find himself low on the depth chart and bounce. Goner #3.

Next is any non true freshmen RB that finds himself 4th or 5th on the depth chart post spring. Goner #4 and maybe #5.

Certainly any WR that finds himself 6th or 7th on the depth chart. Some of these guys will feel like they have been waiting forever in line to play. Examples like Alante Brown and Will Nixon. If they once again see their names near the bottom of the list then they will hit the portal. I think we lose probably two from our current list. Goners # 6 & 7.

Surprise. There will always be one. Some dude that just isn't fitting in. Doesn't like Lincoln now that he has arrived. (we've seen that lots of times recently) Misses momma or whoever back home. It'll happen. Maybe a guy who was recruited heavily by a coach that left. Example: Brodie Tagaloa. Also the new OL coach might clear out a guy just to make it clear that it is his room. After all he didn't really recruit any of them. Example : Alex Conn. Also we could have some new freshman fail to qualify. I haven't heard of any dudes having trouble. Not like in the past when we knew about Zavier Betts or Omar Manning's struggles. But it is a possibility.
Surprise Goner #8.

There will also be some scholarships that don't get renewed for guys that got one awarded to them in the past like Trent Hixson (extremely likely) Wyatt Liewer (seems likely) or Damien Jackson (unlikely IMO).

That is my list. 8 dudes between now and summer along with some scholarships not being renewed. This way we also make room for a transfer in on the OL or DL post spring.
I also don't think we end up adding RB Deondre Jackson in May.
