What motor is on then? I’d get which ever one has a Kawasaki or Kohler on the back. But the Hustler is prob a better mower as long as it’s not part of MTD.Going to throw a dart at the board here. Pretty basic 42" John Deere zero turn is about $95 a month for 3 years, if financed, through my quick research on the JD site.
Hustler Dash XD 42" is about $93 a month for 2 years.
What's the better deal through quality and longevity?
I don't know what MTD means. What motor is on then? I’d get which ever one has a Kawasaki or Kohler on the back. But the Hustler is prob a better mower as long as it’s not part of MTD.
MTD is a company or a series of mowers where they all have similar parts, but painted different colors, mostly the stuff you get at the big box stores. An example is that a Troy Bilt and Cub Cadet have the same deck or blades, but painted different colors.I don't know what MTD means.
JD mower is listed as kW V-Twin engine
Hustler for sure has the Kawasaki.
I've never seen Kawasaki listed as kW like that, so not sure 100% on the JD
JD I'm looking at is in the Z Series
My dad, father in law, my brother in law, my big boss at work, and @kenyanfeline, and another poster on here have all said Hustler when it comes to a reliable, starting out zero turn. It's just the compact design of the Dash XD that makes me a little nervous. But, I suppose that's why it's categorized as a good entry level zero turn. Admittedly, the 48" JD I used this weekend did seem like too much for my yard, as great as it was to get done in under 15 minutes.MTD is a company or a series of mowers where they all have similar parts, but painted different colors, mostly the stuff you get at the big box stores. As for the motor, it's a Kawasaki and lists the power as 16kW/21.5 HP.
Your yard is prob not even big enough for a zero turn since your beer won’t be able to drink a whole beer while mowing. I have a commercial JD 60” Ztrac 840 with a liquid cooled Kawasaki and over 2.5 acres to mow. I can mow it all under 90 minutes. I feel that most mowers are reliable as long as you take care of them and change the oil annually. My dad, father in law, my brother in law, my big boss at work, and @kenyanfeline, and another poster on here have all said Hustler when it comes to a reliable, starting out zero turn. Yeah, gut tells me the Hustler 42" is going to be perfect. No, you're right, it's probably not big enough. About 18,000 square feet. Takes every bit of 2 hours to push mow and trim the whole thing. My daughter is about to start some more evening activities during the week, and when we're not being raped by Satan's taint, it does need mowed twice a week to stay respectable looking. Zero turn beats a lawn tractor every time simply due to speed and efficiency and obviously turning radius. My wife doesn't have a ton of patience after coming home from being an elementary special ed teacher either so asking her to basically single mom for a couple hours a couple times a week so I can enjoy mowing is a tough sell once she's already pissed off from the day. My neighbor has a zero turn too and he lets one of his kids ride with him when he mows so I figure I can do the same with my toddler and be real efficient.Your yard is prob not even big enough for a zero turn since your beer won’t be able to drink a whole beer while mowing. You really need to find out how many hours they’ve had and how they have been maintained.Bump.
Here's where I'm at, a little dilemma. I'm planning on buying a zero turn this weekend. I'm stuck at this point between used and new. Pros and Cons. I need thoughts based on engine knowledge and what would be worth it. Really stuck between a Hustler Dash XD, and a major used brand on Facebook Marketplace for somewhere between $1K-$1500.
If I go Hustler, it's a 42 or 48" Dash XD for about $90 a month for 4 years. That's fine, honestly, but it is an extra payment on something. This has a Kawasaki engine
There's a used Hustler Raptor 42" for $1500, and a used Toro from 2011 that's a 42" for only $1K. Both have Kohler engines. Raptor is a 2016. No hours listed on either used mower.
Really my question is, do Kohlers last a long time? Are repairs easy enough to do myself? I'm no mechanic, or are repairs cheap enough if I take it to the shop here at work to fix? Obviously don't know what repairs may or may not come and how fast they may or may not come.
Just buying one for a one time price seems like the better deal over a 4 year payment, but what's the risk of being nickel and dimed?
I should mention that I am considering some side business next mowing season to cut some yards in the neighborhood on the weekends, so reliability with a mower is important.
The guy with the Toro owns a small dealer in Glenwood, IA, where it's being sold from, and said there's no hour meter on it. It does looks very clean. I'm basically banking on having to replace stuff as time goes on, if I do go that way. I will probably send the guy a message though and see how much he's willing to tell me.You really need to find out how many hours they’ve had and how they have been maintained.
If either are close to 1,500-2k I’d stay away hour wise.
I just bought a new John Deere z330m with a Kawasaki engine and it’s bad ass
My brother in law says Hustler. He used to work with mowers all day long during mowing seasonNot sure about the engines but def the Hustler over Toro.
youre overthinking this shit times a million dude. just buy a fucking mowerBump.

I don’t have $3500 to drop on a new one. If I would. That’s why I’m considering the used routealso why would you ever finance a mower?
Fair. For sure fair. Koehler then?youre overthinking this shit times a million dude. just buy a fucking mower
i would go used. you can buy 3 used ones over 10 years vs 1 new one. just dont buy a piece of shit clunker 😂I don’t have $3500 to drop on a new one. If I would. That’s why I’m considering the used route
