What a joke LPS is...

Finals weeks for our high schoolers. Monday was supposed to be a regular day, with Finals on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. On Monday, they decide that because there might be bad weather on Thursday, that they'll redo the schedule and put finals on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday goes off as planned. Last night they send an e-mail out saying that they are going to cancel classes for Wednesday because of the weather and they'll have to make up their finals in January when they come back to school. Of course, there's literally no reason why they couldn't have had school today (cancelled the lunch that was built into the schedule) and gotten them out early.

Now they send an e-mail saying that the finals that they take in January will only count if it helps their grade and won't count if it hurts their grade. Oh, and they're going to retroactively do that to the finals that they took on Tuesday.

What a joke our education system has become.

driving from denver to omaha tomorrow....really hoping it settles down tomorrow
You do check the weather don’t you? Not sure how far west it goes but with the snow, below zero (reg temps) and excessive wind you’re asking for a death wish. If it’s a dry snow (which it likely will be) you won’t be able to see shit.

They have to make a huge decision with so many factors at play to cancel school. People make it sound like it's so easy.

Hindsight is 20/20 but if you have to decide yesterday you can only go with the information of the forecast then and you have to plan to get all the kids and staff home safely today. Sure, it ended up not starting at noon today but what happened if it got nasty this morning. How are you busing all the special needs kids home safely? How are you sending kids walking home in frost bite type temperatures?

They did the right thing. I have no idea how people extrapolate this to our education system being a joke.

Feeding cows and breaking up some ice water this evening with the ol man, heading to KS tomorrow early afternoon. We'll see what kind of balls the new F150 has

haha yes, yes i do.

hoping for not much accumulation today. wind will be the x-factor. i can always stop in Grant on the drive home and stay at my cousins if its nasty.

not ideal timing, but is what it is

I’ve got a friend out by grant. Elsie. Not a bad place to stay if you could squeeze in a mile deer hunt or coyote hunt.

First of all, this "storm" was known about by the weekend. Prudent measures may have been to say "We're going to do finals on Monday and Tuesday" just in case, but they didn't do that.

The joke is "we're only going to count the final if it helps your grade, not if it hurts it". What's the fucking point of a final then?

I doubt it was very easy to just shift the one day let alone two days. LPS manages 42k students. It's not easy to turn a ship that large.

For the second thing, do you really want to beat up kids grades in this situation after being idle for 2 weeks of Christmas vacation. It's the best of a bad situation.

1. Why should finals that they took on Tuesday, now not count if they negatively impact the student's grade, because they postponed Wednesday's finals? That makes no sense. They knew they had these finals and they were taken when they should have been.

2. Why should finals that they now take in January (after having 3 full weeks to prepare for them now) not count if they negatively impact the student's grade. You had 3 additional weeks to prepare. The horror, how the hell did I manage my way through high school when my finals were all after Christmas break...

It's more of the freaking "celebrate mediocrity" that our schools have embraced. We don't celebrate and encourage excellence any longer, instead we drag people down to the average...
