I know that a lot of D1 schools break their kids up by age/ability in the weight room. The younger guys are more or less learning how to lift, theirs a mid tier group and then an advanced group mostly of older guys.

It doesn’t make much sense for a 23 year old and an 18 year old to be doing the same lifting.

It can work both ways.

I attended a bunch of lifting sessions during the Pelini years and some for coaches after that. Rex Burkhead was an amazing lifter to watch. Perfect technique on everything. I was in a lot of sessions the year we had just added 2 RBs in Ameer and Aaron Green plus Braylon Heard from the year before.

Fans were excited about Green and Heard because of their rankings but in the weight room they were always at the racks on the edges. Never really pushing themselves.

Ameer was at the center rack learning from Rex the whole time pushing himself to be the best.

I wasn't worried at all when we lost Green and Heard because the right guy stayed.

Side note: At the time they had different lifting times mostly based on schedules so there was a always a mix of ages and skills in the room.
