Why does our OL continue to suck?

Scott Frost has made a lot of mistakes at Nebraska. Each mistake contributes to the causes leading to the effects which result in losing.

But one mistake will likely haunt Frost forever:
The hiring of Greg Austin.

Austin has 2 Big flaws:

1. He gets emotional to the point of incoherence when instructing. So if a dude isn't doing their job he loses his God Damn mind without explaining what their doing wrong. Now most offensive coaches lose their God Damn minds, but the good ones can still communicate. This has been really problematic for Piper and Benhart. These dudes have 30 combined starts between them, and are now worse players than when they played their first minutes.

2. Austin wasn't prepared to evaluate high school offensive linemen and project their ability to play in the Big Ten. Dude's like Conn, Lynn, Banks, Matthew Anderson, and Fritchske arrived on campus with mid major ceilings. Nebraska's offensive line should be propped up right now by the 2018 and 2019 classes. There will only be one starter from from that 2019 recruiting class in 2022.

IMHO here are 3 problems with the program since Frost has taken over:

1. Offensive Identity - we really haven't had one. For example look at the different types/styles of QB's we have recruited. We started out recruiting small fast WR and now going after more bigger WR's. Doesn't help that our play calling has been horrifying and sporadic.

2. Identifying Talent - It seems this staff has brought in quite a few recruits who just weren't athletic or big enough to compete at the level necessary for the B1G. Seems like quite a few reaches. Even I had questions after watching some of their highlights reels as to how athletic some of the recruits were. Look at where a majority of the ones who have left have transferred to as that will give you an example of what other coaches think of the talent that didn't see the field for us. I want to be competing against the Michigan's, Oklahoma's, Oregon's... of the football world for recruits not Tulane, South Florida, Colorado St, Tulsa..... Find the talented players that fit our system.

3. Player Development - IMHO our player development has been quite poor under Frost & Co. Our projected star offensive players are basically all transfers with 7 of them being their 1st season here. What happened to the higher rated players we recruited out of high school? So many 4 Stars have left our program after not playing which could be development or identifying talent. Think about where our offense production would be without these transfers:
-QB - Thompson (starter)
-QB - Purdy (#2)
-RB - Grant (starter or #2)
-WR - Palmer (Starter)
-WR - Washington (Starter or #2)
-WR - Garcia-Castaneda (Starter or #2)
-WR - Martin (Starter or #2)
-WR - Omar Manning (Starter or #2)
-TE - Vokolek (Starter)
-TE - Brewington (#2)
-K - Bleekrode (Starter)

Rahmir Johnson is the only Offensive Skill Position Player on the Roster that we recruited out of high school that might start. And he actually might be the only high school recruit that is in the 2 Deep for Offensive Skill Position Players. Vokole & Manning are the only ones that have been here for 2 seasons or more.

I agree talent and development are the biggest issue. I would also throw in game management and attention to detail especially on special teams. I think Frost came in thinking I’ll just out score opponents and didn’t take other aspects seriously.

like my old college roommate used to say. "we need more CFO's - Coons From Omaha."

I think Frost screwed up too when he didn’t get rid of Austin when he got rid of Walters. If he would have gotten an average OL coach at that point he may not be trying to save his job this year, but then again Frost did hire Lubick to replace Walters so he probably would have made a dog shit hire in this hypo scenario on OL as well

I think part of the problem is they haven't found a run scheme to really hang their hats on. Every game they have something new or don't have something they run every week well.

They've run tight zone, mid zone, outside zone, zone lock in the run game. I've seen power, dart, short trap, belly g, draw, and even seemed like they were dabbling in duo at times.

Like...holy fuck. that's a fuck ton of schemes. There's no way to run that many, well. Not to mention that doesn't include the screen game and protections.

I think they're going to be a heavy zone team, both tight and outside zone based on what I've seen in the one spring practice and from OL drills posted on the twitterverse. After that, who knows. I'm sure since it's Frost's run game there will be some more gap scheme stuff...how much...hopefully it's limited.
