Well, I mean those three things do make perfect sense. I would agree with all three.

Also need to get away from the 3-3-5 and just do a true 4-2-5, which would work better in the Big 10. Also the defense that Buffalo ran when JoBu was there.
With Buffalo's players, I presume?

As Jordan Fox has pointed out, even though Nebraska refers to it's scheme as a 3-3-5 they are in a 4 man front way more than half the time, and he suggests this comes from Butler's experience at Buffalo. He said we are essentially playing a 4-2-5 now. He hasn't talked about percentages lately, but Fox noted we were in a 4 man front 61% of the time last year and over 90% of the time in our opener.

It’s not a 4-2-5 when one of your 4 lineman is a 230 pound jack

But I do think we ran a lot of true 4-2-5 against PSU. We didn’t seem to know what we were doing though. And we were still undersized.

We ran 5 man fronts on at least a handful of plays, we’re just not rostered to run something other than a 3.

I was always a 4-3 guy, but we have a hard enough time finding the right bodies for 3 man fronts.

And I think it’s much easier to find personnel, especially lineman, for the 4-2-5 every year than the 3-3-5.

That's a personnel issue, not a scheme issue.

Unfortunately for us there is no scheme that is based on having small linemen.

While I agree that our DL is small and not very good, our 2nd and 3rd levels have been just as bad in the run game too. They don't know where to fit into the run game and are atrocious tackling in space. The whole defense is fundamentally bad.

We are, we just lack the difference makers at nose and DE.

Switching to a traditional 4 man front means you’ve growing the interior DL room to accommodate and while we can find bodies to fill those slots, we haven’t shown a history of being able correctly fill both the DT and DE spots in a four man front since Pelini’s early years and that was primarily Callahan recruits.
