Week 8 @ Minnesota: Game Notes, Depth Chart, Etc

Does anyone know of any public tailgates by gopher stadium? We will be up there with a large group but haven’t heard of anything going on.

People are making Minnesota out to be some juggernaut. Nebraska had them in 2023, literally just fumbled when

I dont know about tailgates, but when I go there I go to Surly. Massive indoor/outdoor brewery there that is relatively close to the stadium.

Surly is a good time

My only thing is: I don't think Minnesota has EVER really been good. They usually look like shit in the first 5 games of the season. Then their season turns on the Nebraska game. They beat us...Fleck goes apeshit....and then they actually go on a mini-run after that and get some Ws.

So my only counter is, they always look like shit to me. But they've beaten us 6 out of 7 times. And the Nebraska that played 2-3 quarters vs MSU and MD could certainly lose this road FRI night game on a short week.

One thing is Fleck likes Rhule so he won't have that maniacal streak in him he had vs Frost. I think the MN teams fed off his psychosis. They always played their best game of the season vs Nebraska.

Their 2019 team was really, really good. That team had 13 starters that went on to the NFL. If the modern playoff format existed back then, that team likely gets a draw. They absolutely dominated a 10 win Auburn team that didn't sit out any players.

But other than that team, Fleck's teams have been marginal at best. His 2023 team was actually terrible. Nebraska was just worse though with Jeff Sims at QB.

I watched some of the Minnesota-Purdue game last night, and this seems like one of the worst teams Fleck has had.

The OL looks like a big step down from what they usually have and the skill positions look mediocre

I get that it's a conference road game on a short week, but it won't surprise me if this ends up being something like a 35-10 game

I watched bits and pieces of it Saturday. It was not good football.

I didn’t watch any of it, but hearing you all describe Minny makes me think of lowa every year. They play like shit and then the other team starts fumbling the ball without being touched and possessed to commit a bunch of stupid penalties, and lowa walks away with a win.

It’s mind bottling.

The difference is that Cockeye's average ranking in points allowed over the last 5 years is #7 in the country, while Minnesota's is 32nd.

This year, Minnesota is 49th while Cockeye is 8th. Cockeye is always pretty dang good on special teams as well.

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule

***Rhule said Nebraska’s focus had been “great” all week, and the only talk about the outside noise regarding the rumors of Rhule and Penn State came during Tuesday’s media availability.

***Rhule said NU practiced with “insane crowd noise” this week in practice to prepare for Friday night’s road environment. He learned how loud UM’s stadium could be when they played there two years ago.

***Rhule said Emmett Johnson would be a captain next year. He said he was excited for Johnson to return home to Minneapolis, and Nebraska will practice at Johnson’s old high school on Thursday.

***Rhule said he “highly” respects Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck. He said Fleck was a coach he’d let his son play for because of how much he teaches character and mindset. They’ve gotten to know each other since their early days of coaching, and now they have a great mutual respect.

They even ran into each other at a Kenny Chesney concert this summer and spent some time together.

***Rhule said every coach and player who was at the Minnesota game two years ago had grown “in every single way” since then. He thinks the Huskers are a much better team now than they were then. That’s shown by how they’ve handled adversity this season. That said, none of that means anything if they don’t carry that over again on Friday night.

***Rhule noted that outside zone runs have hurt Nebraska’s defense, and Minnesota is an outside zone team. He praised UM’s top two running backs, Darius Taylor and Fame Ijeboi, saying that the duo would be a significant challenge for the Blackshirts.

***Rhule didn’t think Nebraska “had a problem” with its pass rush at Maryland. He said DC John Butler is always very critical of his unit. But Rhule thought the defense played well and pressured the quarterback.

***Rhule said defensive back Malcolm Hartzog was out for the Minnesota game. He added that left tackle Elijah Pritchett was 100% after dealing with an ankle injury last week.
