Week 8 @ Minnesota: Game Notes, Depth Chart, Etc

I specifically used the word "look" because on box scores and spreadsheets nebraska is substantially better but I still feel like we aren't passing the eye test defensively. We are a better defense but I am selling some stock in it

2-4 ATS in our last 6. Not significantly overrated but I think we're metrics darlings right now

Finishing 2-4 against the spread has nothing to do with your original point about both defenses. That comment isn't accurate at all. I've watched more Minnesota football than you apparently. Outside of Koi Perich and Anthony Smith, there isn't a single Gopher defensive player who could start at Nebraska. And Perich is the only real future sure fire pro on that list. Smith is a late round pick at best. WLB Devon Williams is a solid player, but very similar to a Mohammed Barry type athlete. The guy will work his butt off, but the athleticism doesn't translate beyond the Big Ten.

Hell, their top Cornerback is a transfer from Cockeye who left because he was going to be 3rd string for the Cockeyes. Middle Linebacker Maverick Barankowski looks like he runs about 5.3 forty. Their top "pass rusher," Jaxon Howard has 1 sack and 2 hurries on the season.

They can't rush the passer at all. Their run defense, which has been good for a number of years is getting shredded out on the edge. They've been good against the run for a number of years because they had good speed on the perimeter. That's not the case this season. Their linebackers have been pretty awful in pursuit. Again.. kind of reminds me of Mo Barry.

Is Nebraska leaky at times on defense? Yes.

But Nebraska has a LOT more playmakers and athleticism across the board. And please spare me the comment about "box scores." There is a distinct difference between allowing 6 yards per play and 3.9 yards per play vs. Power Conference opponents. And while Minnesota did play Ohio State, they also struggled to shut down Rutgers and Purdue.

One other thing about metrics and box scores since you brought it up:

Minnesota's statistical framework includes a game vs. Northwestern State, the absolute worst team in the FCS. NW State is currently dead last in total offense in the FCS level. 40% of the forced turnovers from Minnesota came in that game alone.
