Wager And McGuire Press Conference

Yeah someone on Rivals brought up the fact that in the military you have guys close in age who are in charge of each other, but... football isn't the military. In the military they are used to the hierarchy being close in age. For college football it's completely out of the ordinary to have a coach be this close in age, ESPECIALLY when he looks and sounds even younger (all due respect, nothing he can do about that part).

I'm not saying it won't work, but it's a big wildcard. Most big time college football players want to be coached hard by someone who they fully trust and believe will help them get to the next level. Will they want to be coached by a light-hearted peer offering up honey buns and pop tarts in his office? Will parents trust him with their sons' futures? I know he was jokingly playing into the youth thing with the honey buns and pop tarts answer but I honestly feel a little nervous about it!

But like I said, there's nothing to do but root for it to work out, and by this time next year it'll be much less of an issue one way or another because we'll have something to judge from. I mean best case scenario he's a prodigy and he's an actual fully effective P5 coach by like, year 4, but there's just no way I can buy that he's actually "ready" for this job right now. And it's not even his fault, I just don't think it's really possible.

I like pretty much everything Rhule has done so far, his assistant hires, etc.

But I still am in a quandry about this Mcguire kid as our full time receivers coach. It's not just his age... it's that he acts, looks and speaks like he is 19 going on 20. I am not sure he will be able to command the respect of the players that a full time position coach should have. Seems iffy.

Hope I am way wrong on my first impressions of the kid. Just not seeing "it" with him and why Rhule hired him, yet. I'm sure there's more substance to it than first impressions from a coaches meet and greet press conference.

Of course I have NO idea how he actually coaches on the field or handles players in meetings, film sessions, etc. But he has a deer in the headlights way about him - not surprising for a 23 yr old kid where his first full time coaching job is as a major position coach at a blue blood football program. It's not like he has the cache of a star player, either.

I hope to be very wrong about the vibe I have gotten thus far seeing him.
I think having polished media answers is something you don't really figure out until 27 in a normal scenario. He may figure it out by 25 being such a wunderkind. But still - first time having to answer questions in a Big 10 presser - that's a big deal.

Here's what I gathered - the kid loves to connect with his room, is constantly watching film, and loves to compete and isn't afraid to do so. He's enthusiastic. Sometimes that comes off as cheesy or "not big enough for the moment"

I don't know how he will shake out - but knowing this was going to be your profession since 2nd grade, having the people around him that he's had, and seemingly everyone saying "he's a stud - just watch" is good enough for me.

The age thing was definitely a concern of mine when he was first hired. I'd add that since we've brought in a few good receivers, plus IGC and Betts sticking around, I'm not sure that's a huge issue. As they were aware of who their coach would be and must have at least some level of confidence in him/the staff.

I think it's less of an issue that most people will make it out to be. The lack on inexperience doesn't bother me when it comes to the individual coaching, moreseo on the side of game planning.

It's probably the biggest worry I have with the offensive staff. Who in that room has the experience to say "this isn't working, but here is a solution we used at my last stop" or something along those lines? The only person I can think of is Rhule himself.

I'd say the defensive side has the same issue except that they have a guy like Kevin McGarry who's been around a long time that can help with stuff like that.

All I know is, since watching McGuire's press conference, I haven't slept a wink.

Fear and anxiety is coursing through my veins non-stop.

Please play for me, our offense, and the well-being of the Nebraska wide receivers.

What’s the worse thing that can happen? We win 4 games this next year?

Big time experience didn’t get us where we needed to be. Maybe little to no experience is where its at.

Honestly we just need good coaches instead of bad coaches

When I was in college I had some very young professors and TAs. It was pretty easy to distinguish which ones knew their shit and which ones didn't. I get the feeling McGuire is the former. If not, I'll look into what 70 year old receivers coaches are available and tweet the list to Rhule.

I’m not saying McGuire will be a great coach or anything of the sort. The thing to remember is that Rhule is coming off the first failure of his coaching career - he wants to re-establish himself as a successful coach. He is committed to rebuilding this program and I believe he will do it. His track record shows he can. He will replace McGuire if he is not up to the task.

McGuire’s age doesn’t concern me. A good coach is a good coach, old or young. They have energy, they know what they are talking about, and they have expectations for practices/games. If McGuire is one of the young coaches you can find at high schools too, who comes into their first big job and know it all...he will fail grandly. If he is willing to keep learning throughout his career, keep working hard and trying to get better...he will be fine.

I'm not sure where you got 27 lol but I agree with your sentiment.
