Jim, you exceeded your pitch count long ago. Your sheer volume of replies places an unspeakable burden on the reader.

I give you nothing. If anything I should be compensated by each of you for the privilege of reading my words.

1620 had Sherman on on Wednesday I think to discuss this. Sherman said this is the game you have to win because if it’s then it’s a real possibility of being 4-4 going into the last 4, and all bets are off for a bowl game or not going into the last month. Win tomorrow, the feeling is a lot better

Maybe if you lose. If you win no one will remember this game in 2 weeks. People say stuff like this because they have PTSD and are constantly seeing boogey men around every corner. You would think Rutgers and Indiana were Penn State and Oregon the way some people talk about them. In reality they are two solid but below average teams.

Nebraska just hasnt had a normal season in so long that everyone freaks out and sees the worst. A normal team can have a bad game, lose to Illinois and then go beat USC. Everyone had the backhalf of the schedule as some daunting task, but now its a bad UCLA team, Wisconsin's season looks like its going down the tubes, and Cockeye is Cockeye. USC even looks gettable.

All that said, losing to Rutgers would suck, but I really don't think they are that good. Nebraska will probably win then we will start discredit that win and build Indiana into prime Oregon for 2 weeks.

I think this is largely true. I was listening to the Pick 6 podcast last night and Sam McKewon said that Rutgers is clearly better than Illinois (!) this year. They are not. Rutgers could very easily be 2-2 now. They should have lost to UW. And if the game went 2 min longer vs VT they would have lost that game too.

Remember, Illinois had a QB put on a career best performance and basically have almost 100% accuracy in key moments to keep drives alive. AND they still only won bc we missed 1 pass in the end.

I just don't see Kaliakmanis performing anywhere near what Altmeyer did 2 weeks ago. I think NU plays it's most complete game of the season, wins by 10-14 or more.

But it is our most important game of the season bc the repercussions of losing are very bad. But as I said, this was the same scenario before CU game, Illinois game and Purdue game. And it will be the scenario for Indiana game. And it may be the scenario for Cockeye and Wisconsin games too. So we may end up playing 6-7 "this is the most important game of our season"s this year.

The schedule ended up tougher than it looked in August, but if in year 2 with what they returned on defense + a legit QB + portal receivers + returning OL starters isn't enough to clear the most minimal hurdle that exists for progress, I think questions need to be asked about Rhule.

Will he fire Foley? Is he managing the game effectively? Why would we expect the defense to be better or the same next year with the losses they'll have?

The answer for importance is probably that every game is the most important game until they get to 6 and then every game become the most important game so long as they're plausibly in the playoff hunt. And if they aren't, then every game is the most important to get to 9-10 or whatever level they need to get the national dudes to bite on the "oh wow Nebraska is going to be a problem next year" narrative

100%. People still have not accepted that Nebraska has a good rush defense. Rutgers isnt going to be able to run the ball. They didnt play the best game vs Illinois, but they only gave up 166 rushing yards and that includes OT. People act like Nebraska gave up 400 rushing yards

Illinois won that game like you said be because Altmyer was very efficient and was able to extend drives with the a very efficient passing game and his legs. I really dont see Rutgers being able to do that.

Nebraska can still lose this game, but that will be due to Nebraska shenanigans like giving up kick return touchdown or having a FG blocked for a touchdown. The game is at home. Nebraska just needs to minimize shenanigans and score TDs in the endzone and its a comfortable win IMO. And guess what, each week Raiola is going to get better. One of these weeks he is going to throw for like 350-400 yards and 4-5 touchdowns.

I get ya OP. My only counterpoint is:
  1. Colorado was the most important game of the season, until it wasn't
  2. Then Illinois was the most important game of the season (first real test)
  3. Then Purdoodoo was the most important game of the season (if we lost it, entire season wrecked)
Now Buttgers is the most important game of the season. I think we'll win by 10-14. Then people will say "Buttgers is overrated - they should have lost to Washington."

Then Indiana will be the most important game of the season.

I guess I'm just exhausted by all the "most important game of the season"s. There's a new one almost every week.
Right there with you. Can't be the most important game every week.
