Since yesterday was a window into our possible team next year here are some thoughts.

1: It was a gutsy and commendable performance by Smothers yesterday, but he isn't gonna get us to where we want. In the end he was Luke 2.0 and it just isn't gonna work over the course of an entire season when you consider that our defense is gonna be less efficient. We need to hit the portal and soon....Unless......ughh....Adrian returns.

2: A positive for Frost is that we were in position to win without our starting QB, RB, DT, OLB. Add that 3 of them are literally our top 3 players on the team. Great job game planning in lieu of those absences. It shows that we could have life after these guys leave.

3: But once again we were stung by.......special teams. If we don't address special teams in the off season (for real this time because we were told all summer that they were working on ST to begin every practice...what bullshit) We lost 5 games this year because of special teams and won exactly zero games because of special teams. Better special teams this year and we are bowling, Frost is getting another extension and my therapist isn't having such a good Christmas.

4: Another hire IMO should be a sports psychologist. There is some sort of team wide mental block. Focus needs to be the name of the game the whole off-season. And not just for the players. The mental side of sports is huge and there is something totally broken within the program.

5: Frost needs to address his focus as well. How many times did the cameras show Frost jawing with the refs this year? He is obsessed with it. He spends a big chunk of game complaining. It takes away his attention and energy from you know.... coaching. And obviously the players see and hear it, so their focus is now on the refs too. It's a mistake and one that Frost makes every single game. His attention needs to be more attuned to the game and things that he can control and not whatever injustice he thinks happened that he can't change after the fact.

Extra bonus thought: Cut the hype videos. Cut the special uniforms. Cut the...ummmm haircuts. Cut the "Just run the damn ball" hats. Cut all nonsense that isn't working on getting better at football. Time and energy needs to be spent improving and not a photo shoot in a cave (yeah that happened), not mugging for the camera at every practice, not producing another "Patriotism" piece, no more Frost as the field general while the guys work out at the lake videos (that happened too), no more power point presentations about our new and super innovative NIL in house office that is just full of corporate jargon buzzwords.

Football. Just football.

Practice football, watch football, read books about football, jerk it to football porn.

FUCK YOU

RUN THE BALL!

I think Smothers showed more in that game than Luke ever did. He atleast looks like a qb.

I was actually pretty impressed with him. I don't think that running him as much as they did is sustainable, but if you hire an OC who can improve some of the short to intermediate passing game and an OL coach who can make that line not a flaming bag of shit, you could have something. You're not going to win a BIG ten title with the kid, but that's a second order concern at this point.

I think he could be a Tanner Morgan type qb with better speed if he takes care of the ball and Frost would cater the offense to Smother’s strengths. I would take it over what Frost has done with Martinez.

It'll be interesting to see how the next several months unfold

You have to wonder if he had played all year how much better he would be simply tied to all the PT and experience of simply being on the field each game.

We know what Martinez’s ceiling is but have no idea what Smothers’ might be. That said, Frost still better search the portal high and low for a QB.

I came away pretty impressed with Smothers overall. Only thing that really concerns me is the amount of carries Smothers would be expected to have each game. 20+ carries doesn't seem sustainable in the big. It could also change with a more dynamic supporting cast of running backs and pass blockers. Who knows. Gonna be interesting to see who Frost is going to be able to reel in for offensive coaches and then what they can get out of the portal.

If a new OL coach results in better line play next year, plus continued development with the RBs, the wear and tear on a running QB should be reduced I would hope.

I don't think Smothers is the guy. Outside of the throw to Manning (and maybe one to Toure), I'm not sure he threw to the middle of the field all day. Arm strength isn't there and he is not big enough or a special enough athlete to build a dominant QB run game around. We need a bell cow back and a trio of OL for him to work long term. He is not a centerpiece. That said, he was not our primary issue yesterday.

Oh, and BTW... Austin Allen was criminally underutilized this year despite holding nearly all of our TE records. That dude is special.

What does it mean to be "the guy" ?

Agree. It’s not realistic to run your 180lbs QB 20 times a game for an entire season. He’s not a big ten QB. And I don’t think an OC is going to come in here and think Logan is the guy to get this team over the hump.

Smothers is Vedral 2.0
Won’t wow u but a solid QB if not asked to be the focal point of the offense
But our offense needs the QB to e the focal point to really be what it can be

and at least Logan took hits. AM hasn't taken a solid hit since the "knee-wrenching" in the 2018 Colorado game

We need to fix our running game. I really like the wrinkles we’ve developed off of PA, but we had 3.0 ypc and negative EPA rushing. I think we’ve had negative EPA rushing in more games than not this year
