Wanted to do a little deep dive into Thompson's 2021 supporting cast vs Martinez's 2021 supporting cast.

First, a look into how both QBs grade out:

A few notes about Thompson:
1. Grades out slightly higher offensively
2. Higher passing grade

It was no secret that the 2021 Offensive line was the a sore sight for NU.
Here's how each QB performed when pressured:

A few notes:
1. Martinez was under more duress than Thompson
2. Thompson struggled when pressured
3. Thompson was turnover prone when pressured

Third, a quick comparison of the overall supporting cast:

Notes:
1. Thompson benefitted from Heisman worthy running back play
2. Thompson had an NFL caliber receiver in Xavier Worthy

3. Thompson targeted Worthy far more than any other receiver (40% of passes thrown were to Worthy)

Key Takeaways:

1. NU's offensive line play has to improve regardless of who the quarterback is
2. Thompson needs to find a #1 option that the can force feed like Xavier Worthy
3. NU's run game has to provide some support for Thompson as he's never had to carry the load himself
4. Thompson's play under pressure will need to improve in a conference dominated by NFL defensive pass rushers

We enjoy the PFF breakdowns? I have more cooking right now - anyone interested?

If I’m reading this correctly what you’re saying is that Urb will be our coach in 2023.

Very strong possibility that by the end of next year we'll be able to acknowledge that Martinez wasn't the problem.
I think he was part of the problem because he still had plenty of chances to win games late and never could, but there were many more problems besides him.

One stat probably not shown in the “when pressured” category is that although Thompson turned the ball over more frequently in theory, I’ll bet if you take the stat 10 yards down field you’ll find that Martinez actually leads the turnover category on plays when pressured.

Martinez being a turnover prone goober was probably the difference between 3-9 and 6-6. Frost being a fucking amateur puts the ceiling at about 6-6 doe
If we have average special teams last year we probably win 6. Outside a decent defense we were a shitty team.

Martinez wasn’t the only problem but he absolutely was one of the problems. Zero game winning drives in his career.

Talented kid, but not talented enough.

Casey Thompson played half a year with a broken thumb and still threw the ball better than Martinez.

I despise PFF but appreciate the time you put into this.

I disagree that Thompson needs to find a receiver to force feed like he did Worthy. That likely is what made him turnover prone vs pressure.

I think Martinez made himself the focal point too much in our offense which made us predictable and easy to stop in crunch time.

I don’t think Casey’s capable of doing that, but I think he’s more capable of distributing the ball.

In my head that should be a positive, but that also means when the offensive line is playing ‘Toro’, our offensive production of Adrian making 3 guys miss and scrambling for a first down won’t exist.

He was part of the problem, just one of many.

The folks that put most of NU's issues on Martinez are typically doing so to exonerate Frost.
Only correct answer. If a player isn't performing you coach him up, recruit over him or replace him. We either don't have the capable coaches or coaches that recruited and developed the necessary depth. Poor player evaluation and player development along with shoddy coaching has been the calling card of Frost's Staffs so far. So many issues in the program like discipline, execution, player retention, under qualified coaches, lack of addressing Special Teams until after Year 4, poor player evaluations.......... it's felt like Amateur Hour and yet fans still make excuses for this staff.
