During about 2 quarters of the Fordham game, I thought this dude was gonna be our boy.

But he only practiced twice right? This was running through my head when I wrote my QB preview.
I have heard great things about Chubba and he really impressed me. Then iirc @slattimer talked up Smothers from the practice he saw in the spring over Casey.
It has been very limitedBut he only practiced twice right?
I thought one of our previous QBs when to one of those other bottom feeders and had a pretty good day against usVedral schooled us?
I guess Vedral went to Buttgers. Which one went to Illinois?Vedral schooled us?
Bunch or something like thatI guess Vedral went to Buttgers. Which one went to Illinois?
Bunch or something like that
Keep in mind, I'm a Debbie Downer, and think we win 4 games, so take all of this with a giant grade of slaw. But he only practiced twice right?
Smothers would be my bet. I expect Chubba to be QB2 and frankly wouldn't surprise me if he was pushing Casey. Plus I know Chubba is Whips guy. If Whip was at Pitt Chubba would be there. Same with WW3.
Smothers could be a solid G5 QB.
The one thing I thought Thompson did well was hang in the pocket and let it fly....but he's short, and our OL....well, I'm not very optimistic.
AJ Bush is who I was thinking of, I believe.Bunch or something like that
The taters on on3 got so triggered when I suggested that. You’d have to think in a year Harrberg will be leaving too unless he’s just a Husker at heart and wants to stay. I don’t believe he’ll warrant a scholarship after this season with Maybe Casey on the roster, purdy, Torres, the new short guy and whoever they target in 2024.
Chubba was the starter before injury I believe. Obviously he wasn't able to earn the job back, but he does have starting experience iircCall me just a wee bit skeptical that a guy who was a third-stringer at Florida State (behind a post-injury Milton) and missed most of spring with an injury is gonna ready to be QB2 in the near future.
O line not good.Keep in mind, I'm a Debbie Downer, and think we win 4 games, so take all of this with a giant grade of slaw.
I wasn't, and haven't been impressed much from Thompson. Maybe he'll surprise, but I'm guessing we'll be underwhelmed...maybe it was the thumb. Who knows. The one thing I thought Thompson did well was hang in the pocket and let it fly....but he's short, and our OL....well, I'm not very optimistic. Escapability and being able to execute the Q run game might be the attributes needed, but we still sucked when we had that in AM. So who knows.
One thing that sticks out to me from some interviews from players, was #1, Thompson being vocal right away, taking a leadership role, yada yada yada, and being praised for it. Then you have interviews with incoming DL, about not being vocal, and earning it first...and being praised for it. So...what is best? Is it forced with Thompson....I don't know, I just know from coaching and playing that some guys just don't take to that if there's any indication it's not real, or forced, or however you want to call it.
Which leads me back to Smothers, I thought he showed the best in terms of all facets of being a more complete quarterback considering the offense as previously constructed. If it really is true (I have doubts and have heard from several people that Frost isn't as hands off as the media is portraying) that the offense is changing and it is Whipple's show, then Smother's may not be the right guy. But if you're keeping the same run game in tact for the most part, you need a QB that can make the reads and run the ball. It's been said Thompson is a capable runner, possibly, I didn't get the indication he was inclined to do it as willingly, but try and make the throws. I know there is also a UNK offense influence on the offense, that favors Smothers and Chubba.
With Chubba, he ultimately might be the guy. He's a better runner than Thompson, and a better thrower than Smothers, allegedly. So if they are going to some kind of blend in Whipple's pass game meshing with Frost's run game, then IMO, Chubba should probably be the guy.
The quotes about a "fair" competition are concerning. The media has all but anointed Thompson as the starter from the get go.
And just from a personal standpoint, I don't like the idea of tailoring "plays" to certain QBs. Run an offense, recruit to your offense. I get having a package for certain players, but it just rubs me the wrong way, just like the...well, Illinois came out in a different front so that threw out half our offense....come the fuck on. That's horseshit. Don't try and tell me you can't run IZ only vs one front, you can't run Dart vs only one front, you can't run "G" only to one front. But if that's the case, then what in the flying fuck is your OL coach doing.
End Rant.

Till we lose of course and Frost knows he needs to do anything to win and not worry about keeping Thompson happy he will be benched.
Ball placement was the other positive I would add...The one thing I thought Thompson did well was hang in the pocket and let it fly....but he's short, and our OL....well, I'm not very optimistic.
