I'd let her win the pillow fight for sure

I hear you... what I guess I'm getting at is on the OL where I'm super pumped with what we did, we brought in 56 P4 starts between 3 guys in the portal. On the DL where I'd argue we need even more help we have 6 P4 starts between 3 guys coming in, and the guy with 5 of those (this thread is about him) is coming off a season-ending injury. Maybe that's just where we are as a program?

I just thought we may be able to pull in an SEC or B1G DL with double-digit starts like we did on the OL twice. Bodies are fine, but that's not what recruiting is about.
Agree completely, I think they feel like the young guys will come around and we’ll be okay but if so I hope they’re right this year because they sure as hell weren’t last year. As we’re all well aware

Dude is going to be a 6th year guy who had one decent season in 2024. Missed most of last season with an injury; played only 3 games. I can in no way defend this take.

We'd have been better off going with some FCS guy who wanted to move up, but had played in a solid several seasons.

This is just another turd in the NT selection pool.

BC had OBVIOUSLY moved on from him. So now we are taking trimmings from bad teams we beat.

Great that this guy had all of THREE offers from FBS programs out of HS ...........

About 17 years ago there was a really long conversation on the old Scout forums (this was after Fox had bought them). I can't remember for sure who the coach was they were talking to, but was a very famous HC who was acknowledged as being a high level recruiter.

The coach was talking about what position was the hardest to recruit, and immediately without hesitation he said the defensive line. He said that the chance that you would get a 1st level choice at DL was the lowest in percentile of any position, so the competition was the greatest at that position. He also said that it was the most transformative position of all in how having a 1st or 2nd round draft choice on your DL was likely to lead to many more victories, than any other position, where you might have a high draft player.

He also pointed out that for most HS DL players, relationships with coaches was tantamount to getting them to commit. He felt that you needed to be working a player like that for about 3 years prior to their commitment, which is why they are so often off the recruiting board prior to other positions.

We haven't had a coach who really knew how to recruit this position well for a long time, and the fact we keep firing or losing them regularly puts us completely behind the other teams in having a chance to get them.

I doubt we spent much to get this guy, so in that regard it’s low risk. Especially considering the other option was the Oregon guy who’s visiting Bama and his old coach at Cal and his reported asking price was in the $1.5M range. That’d make him our 2nd highest player. For a dude who played 15-20 snaps a game last year. At some point you have to say no, even though the guy could improve your team.

Now all that being said, this is a problem they created. They couldn’t close on the KState kid or the UCF kid and that’s not counting how many of their plan A/B they tried to get to campus who wouldn’t even come.

So you wait til the end of the cycle and this is what your left with: cheap dudes with injury history who aren’t that good, or way overpriced guys (like the Oregon guy and Keona Davis).

Much like OL coaches a top DL coach is easily worth well over $1mm a year considering it all starts there. Seems short sighted to not over pay by even $500k+ on a $200mm a year operation to secure a top coach at the position.

You look at what a guy like Larry Johnson does constantly in both recruiting and developing players on the DL, and you can see the value. How many 1st round guys has he coached......

Yes. I mean it seems short sighted in a huge and profitable organization to not allocate an extra mil or two to coaches who can make a difference. I’m sure the Miami Oh DL coach can coach and develop. Can he recruit? He will likely be starting from scratch on DL that can play at P2 level as he wasn’t wasting his time going after them at Miami Oh. So many unforced errors with the staff is just really frustrating.
