Ron Brown confirmed that Yant was being disciplined at one point:

"You know, those who love you will discipline you when they need to. And I love Jaq. And we all do. And we did what we needed to do in terms of the protocol of this university and also our football team. He didn't do anything like really drastically bad. But we have some team rules in certain things, so we needed to deal with that. We needed to pay rent on that. That debt has been forgiven and we move on."

Between stuff like that, and him showing up 30 lbs overweight to fall camp, and the fact that he barely qualified academically, I don't think anyone should count on Yant being a real reliable guy, no matter how much they like him as a runner. This ain't just Frost showing favoritism toward Rahmir or whatever.

So, if we can pick up someone proven from the portal or a freshman phenom then we should. And considering that in the Big 10 it's a good idea to have probably 3 guys that you can count on our current list of ....(checks notes).....zero makes the portal even more important.
