IIRC, we did the same thing with Lamar Jackson. He was a top rated safety that we converted to a CB.

Probably because he was scared of contact for the first several years. Would be hard to play a safety who doesn’t want to tackle

That may (or may not) have been how he was coached to play the position. The shelf life of a hard hitting CB is pretty limited, but most didn't have his size or athleticism. I always felt he was an odd fit at his position as he seemed ideally suited for a strong-side safety. But I say this from a fan perspective, not that of a hut hut corch.
