If it was even possible to install a new offense @God is a Husker and I would be out doing car washes to raise money for Paul Johnson #RTDB

Wonder what would have happened if the NCAA rule change hadn't happened this summer, that let more than 11 guys do on-field coaching. Dana couldn't have taken over the OC spot without someone else immediately losing an on-field coaching job... would have made it significantly tougher for Rhule to make this move.

Lots of mouth breathers over complicating this.

Holgerson, though he belongs to the coaching tree of Mike Leach, is not an “air raid traditionalist” if there is such a thing.

Dana runs the ball more than most think, traditionally, and has done so well. The idea of him being an “air raid coach” is really just due to the concepts within the passing game, and not the act of throwing the ball 55 times per game.

We, and nearly everyone else in CFB, run a lot of air raid concepts already.

A lot of our current passing attack has these concepts built in.

Satterfield was not bad at play design.

Satterfield is not a bad teacher.

Satterfield was not a bad game planner (at least until the defense adjusted.)

Satterfield was just atrociously bad at a few things:
  1. Sequencing said concepts to keep the defense guessing.
  2. Sequencing said concepts in a logical order regarding down, distance, and game situation.
  3. Adjusting on the fly to counter what the defense was showing.
  4. Calling plays that would give our current personnel the best chance to be successful.
That’s what Dana is here to do. Rhule/Satt gave him the playbook. His job is to look at who we have, and call the best game he can.

Let’s see how it goes.

We’re scoring 50 this week aren’t we?

But Scott Shanle says this is insane!

Whether it works or not who knows but this is a big boy football move. This is a Nick Saban sliding Sarkisian over type of call. Not exactly the same but literally brought in better than what he had to take over. Holgorson will get things going, and with our current situation we are going 0-3 down the stretch doing same thing. Kudos to Rhule for gutsy call

This is spot on.

I don’t know how many plays teams generally carry into each game. But it’s not the entire playbook. We likely have 40-50 air raid plays in the playbook that everybody knows, we will rep at practice, and Dana can package together in his image.

If we can fix our tells I think it’ll make a huge difference. That may be the wrinkle we can at least hope is fixed.

What I expect to see is an offense that you can at least see what they’re trying to accomplish. Hopefully the core of what Dana wants begins to develop over the last 25% of the season.

We desperately need to win one game to get the extra practices now. It is absolutely imperative.

... and he's making assumptions without evidence that are contrary to what Rhule actually said today, constructing the worst possible scenario in his mind then getting mad about that scenario as if that's what's atually happening... It feels like the election is still going on!

This was absolutely the right thing to do, for multiple reasons.

Our offense has been horrible. And getting worse. We've all seen that Satt can't weave together a coherent scheme of play calls. We've all seen square peg, round hole, enough from Satt. We've all seen our offense been incredibly predictable, where opposing DC's have had to be LOLing at how easy it is to know what play is coming almost all of the time.

Holgerson really looks to fit well in how we need to improve. There are many aspects to that, but it doesn't have to be complicated, either. Holgerson can utilize our playbook the players know, with our terminology (he is not an idiot and terminology is not going to be an issue), and the chances he is better than Satt at calling a cohesive, sensible, NOT so telegraphed game of play calling is extremely high.

Timing is huge on this IMO. We need the infusion of offensive coaching help/talent right now, Holgerson seems ready to get back into full time coaching now, and with the bye week and obvious need for changes our offense requires, the timing in all aspects works.

I am excited to see a competent, and historically top-notch, CFB play caller up in the booth for these last 3 games, and hopefully that means 4 games, as hopefully this is enough boost in a severe area of need where we can at the very least win ONE of our last 3 regular season games.

Nothing but good can come from this IMO. It needed to be done, had to be done, and an elite CFB OC was there, available and ready at the right time.

I agree a change needed to be made. But so little time to make much impact in my opinion. If he can put together a better game plan, great.

I hope this change succeeds in the short term and really hope it extends in to next year where we could really see results.

Not trying to be negative Nancy by any means. Just hoping it’s not too late for this year.

This is both a long and short term play. More long term though IMO.

I do expect the offense to be better with Holgs. How much this late in the season? Really hard to tell or know. I'm not sitting there watching practice. But even some fairly simple adjustments, plus just better overall playcalling, including counter plays to what defenses are stacking to take away, better run game scheme (it has been so terribly vanilla and telegraphed), and also better passing game adjustments (again, these can be fairly simple to do).

The entire offense has no confidence. Players aren't running routes full speed, all the way through, crisp, etc. RB's are missing reads, holes and blocks (in the passing game). DR has really gotten shook and lost his confidence in decision making. It all flows together - all aspects of the offense have been subpar, and all opposing DC's since damn near the CU game have had more than a solid read on what Satt is going to call and do.

Short term - a shot of adrenaline to the players if they see things that makes sense to work better and help them be more successful. Better coaching in getting players to do their job on each play, regardless of if the play is designed for them to get the rock (finish off your damn routes, even if you are just to clear guy pulling the defender vertical). Helping DR gain his confidence back in making the right read (please, not too many slow developing plays, Holgs), importantly including hot routes and similar.

Offensive line IMO is better than many think. Are they great? No. But I think they are sufficient for us to score more points than we are putting up. They are not the weakest link IMO.

Those are the types of improvements I hope to see in the short term/rest of the season. Long term, if the short term offensive improvements start to happen, then we have our long term OC. An OC with a long history of pretty darn good offensive production by his units.
