Rank em: Head Coach Edition

Only reason I have Frost still above Riley is the talent both coaches inherited. Riley was left with a good stock, (not amazing, but talent to win) while Frost inherited a trash roster. Out of all the coaches since Devaney, Frost inherited the worst roster in my opinion. Now it’s year 4, so definitely no more excuses.
Frost still had enough talent to go bowling. The mental mistakes, penalties, and horrible special teams go back to the coach. If those areas were solid from day one we would have been bowling every year under Frost.

2010 is probably the most talented team we had since 01..

I think Bo had two major faults. Big game coaching and roster management.
If Martinez would have stayed healthy the whole year we would have won the big 12 no doubt. That team was fun to watch with a healthy Martinez and a good defense.

How can you seriously put Frost above Pelini at this point? The only way a person could is if they hate Pelini with a passion which which would cloud their judgement.
1. i hate Pelini with a passion
2. i'm a frost fanboy
3. frost has had an undefeated season, while pelini has been mediocre everywhere he has been the head coach
4. i hate Pelini with a passion
5. frost inherited a shitshow, while pelini inherited a loaded roster

Pelini does his best with other coaches talent. I think Pelini was solid at Nebraska. Now if you want to tell me he wasn’t good enough for Nebraska’s standards of competing for championships that’s fine, but it’s almost laughable at this point after hitting rock bottom with Riley and Frost. This upcoming year is a big year for Frost. If he can’t get us to a bowl, he should be shitcanned because he will be one of the worst coaches in Nebraska history.

Pelini was solid with Callahan talent but the wheels were definitely coming off the bus.

I personally put Callahan above Pelini based in talent acquisition in large part - genuinely think if Callahan got 7 years like Pelini or didn’t have to face the 07 schedule in his determinative year, his results would be on par with those achieved by Pelini, especially if he were willing to part with Coagrove.

Made myself curious and went back to look - Callahan lost 7 games in that “disastrous” 07 year, but 4 of them were against teams that finished in the top 10 that year.

if Osborne hadn’t been brought back mid season and Callahan’s fate sealed, you have a ridiculously talented class coming in the next year with a legit QB to go along with an already very talented roster - I don’t know, I’m sure Callahan would have topped out, especially if he kept Cosgrove - but it really does feel like Callahan got a somewhat raw deal especially coming off a Cotton Bowl team and playing for a Big 12 title

I knew we were fucked from day one with Callahan. My uncles friends dad who was a college coach is good friends with Alverez. He would go up to Wisconsin. They were talking about Cosgrove and Barry said I can find a 100 better coaches x-o wise than Cos, but he is my best recruiter. He told me that story right after Cosgrove was hired.

Callahan himself was never made to be the head coach. He lost two to teams. Like Pelini, he would rather scheme and not deal with all the other bs. Callahan is a great assistant, but was never head coaching material. He was a reach because Pedey botched the whole hiring process. I do agree he was a good recruiter because he surrounded himself with great recruiters.

I mean maybe he was doomed to start? But he also had a really short hook here given his 06 and 05 seasons were relatively successful and the talent he was assembling in 07 was elite.

Seeing the discrepancy in how people feel about Frost and Riley is pretty eye opening in terms of how much “ties” matter here - I don’t think Riley is a good coach, but objectively Frost has been awful, worse than Riley, and he still gets a tremendous pass

100%--Prince, Gomes, Dennard, Hagg, Lavonte, Crick, Camstache, Courtney Osborne (who used to just obliterate people), Will Compton, ect. on D. Piles Naul, Helu, Burkhead, Martinez, Kyler Reed, Kinnie, ect. on offense. Good fucking football team.

That Missouri game is always the one that sticks out to me. Gabbert couldn't do anything that entire game.

Don't forget the 2010 Texas game. All that hype. Only to piss it down our legs.

That was when I knew that Pelini was a dumbshit

The thing that really impresses me about recent coaching hires is how much we've ping ponged offensive schemes. I think Frost is a chucklehead who is going to get fired in the next couple years, but it seems like he would have had a much easier go of things had he been hired immediately after Pelini and started with the skeleton of a spread option-y O rather than after a 3 season gut job by Riley

For sure. The 2015 scheme change was so dumb. We had spread run personnel already in place and we'd been running that scheme since 2010. We were already somewhat ahead of the game and instead we blew everything up and went backwards. Only thing I can think of that would be dumber would be a forced change to a 3-4 defense w/o the personnel to run it.

At the time Callahan was hired, I didn’t see the fit. It was like Rich Rod going to Michigan. Those two should have flipped schools.
