I wonder if Tony White leaving may have been a blessing in terms of keeping Shavers and a couple other young guys around.

I see absolutely no reason that Shavers shouldn’t have been playing 30-40+ snaps all season. Was he gonna portal because he was upset about lack of playing time? I wouldn’t have blamed him.
