Gronowski had much better receivers at SDSU in the Janke twins, a dude Griffin something who is now at Northwestern, and earlier in his career Tucker Kraft. He's also a really good athlete for the QB position at the level FCS which made his running more effective.

But the level of competition is significantly better and he has to rely on his arm more throwing into tighter windows to dudes who are much less likely to go get the ball and here we are
