The bad snap on the 1st down bootleg screwed up that drive. Should have been 2nd and short with an easy throw to Allen.

I had the same thought. I'm guessing the notion there was get five yards or so and make fourth down something you can try. If not, clock runs, you try to draw them off, and punt and make the backup QB drive down the field with little time.
