I thought that too but it is possible apparently. For instance if Boise was ranked higher they could be the 4th conference.

Don't quote me on this though. I didn't actually look at the rule.
This does a good job explaining. Five highest rated conference champions get automatic bid. The other seven are next highest ranked teams.

there is no ranking requirement for five highest ranked conference champions. For example there could be a team ranked 23 that’s the fifth highest ranked conference champion. They’re in.

As far as seeding, the four highest ranked conference champions earn top four spots and receive first round bye.

No independent team such as Notre Dame can earn one of the top four spots.

CFP committee is not keeping an 11-2, Big 12 Champ Colorado out of the playoff. Zero chances of that happening. Zero.

I'm looking at BYU and I don't think BYU has the horses to beat CU. BYU is 9-0 but they haven't done anything remotely impressive since they beat KSU in Sept.
If Colorado wins the Big 12 championship, they are automatically in as one of top 5 conference champions. They could also qualify as one of the first round byes depending on other conference champions final ranking. But that first round bye is not guaranteed.

If Colorado beats BYU in conference championship and it is BYU’s only loss, BYU could still qualify as one of seven remaining seeds. But it would depend on their final ranking.

This is the first year I can think of there is no clear cut 2-3 teams who are better than the rest of the pack. It’s a perfect year for the 12 team playoff.

If both Colorado and BYU get in that would REALLY piss off SEC guy. It's pretty obvious both teams are not top 12 in the country.

If I was a neutral I actually don't have a huge problem w Colorado getting in. They have best player in the country, best QB, best WR. In hoops, you want exciting teams in an NCAA tournament. If I was a neutral, having Colorado in there would be good for the field. I'd probably rather have Colorado in there then 6 SEC teams.

The sec also doesn’t have a dominant team this year even though they probably have 4-5 teams capable of winning a championship.
