First things first, big time outing by Sears. He was in complete control and at moments Childress was calling pitches like a video game. Pure domination! Major props to Timmerman, a true freshmen that didn't get rattled after getting hit hard and he kept filling up the zone. The big boy from Beatrice wasn't fazed in a tie game & tons of pressure. Perry & Daiss finished it off. 0 BB in 9 innings against a Big 12 opponent and it's opening day. Wow, incredible.
I'm curious how many 3 ball counts our pitchers had today? I can think of 3 with Sears, 0 Timmerman, maybe 1 Perry & none with Daiss. So 4 total, maybe 5, that's awesome as well.
14 K's offensively can't be brushed off to opening weekend. It's a continued trend under Harvell where we've averaged around 8.5 or so per season. And if we break it down to clutch hitting, our K ratio has been horrendous the last 2 seasons. Situational hitting has been an achilles heel the last 2 seasons but today Carey & Brumbaugh came thru. And as Stone Cold always says, "that's the bottom line." 3 different times we came thru against Friday arms, although I wasn't overly impressed with Baylors guys. I thought ours outshined theirs in every possible aspect.
1-0, chalk it up!
