We can see why Dowdell wasn't valued at Oregon.
I'm out on Rahmir Johnson. We've heard for so long that he's fast. That he's a pass catcher. He's been here for what seems like a decade and he has never broken out or done anything notable.
Emmett Johnson should probably be the man moving forward and probably should have been from the beginning. But still, he's just average. I like him but at best he has been average.
Gabe Irvin has been snake bitten and probably just needs to go.

So what do we have?..... not much. If You need 4 guys to be "the man" then you actually don't have one. The portal needs to be used both coming and going once it opens. And that includes the coach. Barthel hasn't developed anyone in that room.

WRs: Banks has been so underwhelming. He is a good guy with a lot of hardship in his past and I like him, but the Nebraska stage in the Big 10 has been too much for him.
Neyor plays like a guy who has bad knees. I don't know if it's hesitant or anxious but it seems like he's not doing things full speed or 100%.
Our best WRs are Lloyd and Barney. One is a true freshman and another is a triple jumper learning to be a WR. Something tells me that they don't scare OSU, USC or Cockeye.
Bonner is a football player but isn't a WR or a TEnor a FB. So he can't really help us in any of the 3 positions that we need.
Can IGC not get a few plays to see if he can get open?
That Dimitrius Bell injury is looming large.
Malachi? Don't get me started.
I think we should find a real WR coach and not somebody who has the right name for Texas high school recruiting.

TE
Fidone is the definition of average. And then after that we have a bunch of guys that are athletically refrigerators with arms. But at least we got a TE transfer from LSU who we threw into practice right away so he could blow his knee.

Conclusion: I'm just bored and venting. We were sold a bill of goods in the off season and I am feeling ripped off. I really hope the Railoas don't feel that way.

This is me at 0600 hours. I agree with pretty much everything you said.

I agree with your assessments of the positional talent, but I don't think anyone sold us a bill of goods. It is mostly fan self-deception.

With regard to the RBs and the TEs, I am not sure there was ever a lot of fan enthusiasm about the rooms being loaded anyway. People did get worked up about the transfer WRs, true.

The coaches were positive before the season, but every fan knows they will always be that way. Their job is not to talk down the team before the season, they are trying to build confidence.

Offensive staff: Dysfunctional
It could be they are dysfunctional. It could also be that they are trying to deflect criticism from the players by publicly taking all the blame regardless of how that makes them look. It's almost impossible to tell from the outside. They aren't fighting/arguing with one another in public.

I get it. We don't have any elite talent at any other position than QB.

But I'm going to argue that maybe out talent is less looking elite because of the scheme that our OC cannot do well.

I don't have any issues with Banks aside from his blocking. There should be easier ways to get him the ball.

We need a difference maker at RB. It's been pretty apparent to me the last few games that we don't have that.

Pressers are obviously all coach speak, but Satt and Rhule really don't seem to be on the same page philosophy wise

So....

Rhule has stated numerous times what his vision for an offense is. Take the lead early, take it into the half. Play great defense, and choke out the game by controlling the clock through the run game, especially in the 4th quarter...75+ rushing yards in the 4th.

From what I've gathered and watched....mostly while hammering beers, so I'm probably not crazy accurate....but it's close.

Their base run scheme appears to be Duo IMO. It's downhill, power without a puller, TB reads the Mike and cuts off of it.

They also look to run some zone scheme, IZ/OZ.

They've ran some power on short yardage plays, and have seen counter a couple times...at least once vs the Fluffs for big yards.

Guess I've also seen them run a couple pin and pulls.

But overall...they run a lot of Duo, Duo Wrap, and Duo dressed up. It's safe, it's supposed to be physical...down hill run. Would probably be better if they ran more RPOs off of Duo, and kind of surprised they're not.

But they just don't have a signature run, where they're confident it's going to go for 5 no matter the front, blitz, etc.

It's annoying. And then, they pop a couple of plays that aren't duo, like Counter, like pin and pull for good yardage....and you never see it again....ever. It drives me up the fucking wall. He goes back to the well for shit plays that gain 2-3 yards, and never comes back to counter, which was explosive vs the fluffs. Or pin and pull vs Buttgers or Illinois, can't remember, but the two times they ran it, they popped for 8+.

In terms of the run game, it's just maddening to me. Plus I don't think the OL has been very good.

No identity either
This has been my biggest frustration.

Anyone saying that we don't have the guys - while I DO agree with you that we are lacking the horses to consistently compete - we do have things that our personnel have displayed they do well. We simply are hell bent on NOT living on what we can do well.

Running some form of a drive concept, deeper dig routes, jet sweep action, and Dean's patented "Pass Interference Ball" that DR can throw. These are all things that have produced consistent results - but we just won't make them our identity for some reason.

I'm not sure if it's because we have something in our head we WANT to look like and we are going to just white knuckle it until we are that, or if we think that the things we do well can't be counted on consistently and they work better as "mix ins" but for some reason we won't do these things consistently.

To me the Jet motion stuff has always been a bit gimmicky, but the litmus test for me is that we can execute it so well down in the RZ where space is limited and people are keying on it now. So fucking commit to it. If we have a deficiency at RB, adapt your running game. Obviously you can't just Jet to Barney every run play, but this staff HAS shown some creativity in action they tag onto that Jet Motion. A couple weeks ago that "show Jet to Barney" that they followed up with a second jet action by Bonner was so creative. You can't tell me you can't build more off of that - Show Jet, counter...show jet, Play Action, throw our trusted route concepts...show Jet throw it out to Barney in the flat after you pull his hand off...we have options there to build off of it to alleviate us not having a "real" running game.

This is my biggest frustration - we are not leaning into what we do well. Maybe there's reason for it and I am ALL FOR working through difficulties to establish an identity - but don't tell me you can't have creativity, and some deviation from what you WANT to be that you aren't already, in order to win some football games in the meantime.

Fucking have SOMETHING you can go to no matter what. This shouldn't be so hard in year .5 if you ask me. Find what you do - and do it.

There's been a lot of directionless and meaningless ranting on here the past four days, but this might be the least constructive one yet.

You're mad that players aren't as good as you want them to be and that some of them got injured? You're upset that our best WRs are young and one of them also runs track?
