NSAA votes for 3rd 8-Man Class

They should just combine more schools. Not have 6 or 8 man.
That doesn't work real well when many of the schools are 20+ miles apart from each other. It is a logistical nightmare trying to do practices etc. And even if you do have a school close to you, it doesn't mean they WANT to join you either. I hope they make a class for schools that opt down and allow them to be playoff eligible.

Our school did this last year. We were 3-27 (or whatever) over the last 3 seasons. 1 win was a forfeit, 2 of the wins were against 0-10 teams, so we had nothing to build on and things weren't getting any better. We dropped down to 8 man this year and somehow ended up undefeated, but couldn't go to the playoffs. Now, we never expected to go undefeated, we had some good skill players, but never enough line men so 8 man was perfect for us, but we knew going into it that we wouldn't be playoff eligible so that was fine. It sure would have been interesting though to see how they would have done in the playoffs though. It wouldn't be fair to play against regular 8-man teams, i agree, but if there was another class for teams that opted down to have playoffs against each other, that would be great.

Suck it up and make the drive.

makes sense. huge difference in the low c2 and low d1’s who are all playing 8 man. you wouldnt believe the difference in having 45 kids out vs 20-25.
Yutan was down to like 18 not that long ago. Some kids with no business playing varsity football.

I’d rather see a creation of 9 man.

Class A, B, C. All 11 man.

C2 - 9 man

D - 8 man

D6 - 6 man
Absolutely! And there has been talk of that. I think South Dakota has teams that do that. And I believe some of them may flip back and forth between 9 & 8 man if they go play a Nebraska school.

It isn't that easy though, especially with the bus driver shortages. Right after school is when they do all the bus routes and if you don't have extra busses or extra drivers just to take an extra bus to a football practice, what do you do? Do you make the other school wait an hour or two so that you can get a bus back so you can go? And if so, what time are the kids getting done at night? Most practices start around 4 normally and end at 5:30 or 6. This would push the start back to 530ish and end at 7ish. Then you have the drive back to the school, and them some of those kids live 30 minutes from school too.

Yes, it's easy to say suck it up, but this is just one small detail of many why cooping isn't always the best option.

What’s really the difference between C2 and D then? I’m pretty out of it but does one person make a difference in level of play
Class C IMO is a difficult class. The bottom of C2 typically struggles mightily, and then you have teams that should be playing 11 man dropping into 8 man.

I've never coached 9 man. I've coached both 11 and 8. I think it would be an easier transition from 11 to 9 than to 8. Same with 8 going up.

Class D is such a big class.

I'd personally rather see one class C. The top of C2 would be fine for the most part with C1 schools. The bottom of C2 would be an easier transition to 9 man. Plus there are many upper class D schools that have 40+ kids on their roster. They could easily play 9 man.

Class A and B have their separate issues, don't know if this would help solve any of it, if any C1 teams would play up.

But in the end you'd have something like this. Between Class C 11 man and D2 8 man there's currently 180 or so teams.

Class A - Top 32

Class B - Next 32

Class C - 11 Man - Next 50-60

Class C - 9 Man - Next 50-60

Class D - One Division 8 man - Next 50-60

Class D6 - One Division 6 man

There is still a big issue with private schools vs public schools (and I don't want to turn this into a big debate), but when you can control your enrollment numbers, and just as importantly WHO you allow in your school, you are at a huge advantage. Kids that can be denied at a private school, but can't at a public school still count against your enrollment. And I'm talking about disabled kids in wheelchairs or other physical handicaps, or have severe mental challenges that will never see the light of day on a football field still count against you. They can account for 10+% of some school's enrollments. Heck even the curriculum, like PE, where they can have football practice during school as a "PE activity" is just another advantage that can't happen elsewhere.

Actually usually when they play Nebraska teams they play 11 & 9 man in the same game. When I was in school, our JV would play Gregory every year. Whoever was on offense, dictated how many men were on the field.

I have brought this up on other message boards, and there are posters associated with two schools who get so upset about the recommendation:

- Stuart High School which plays 6 man football- 9 miles from West Holt High School
- McCool Junction which played 6 man for years - 7 miles south of York.

It is completely illogical for those schools to even exist.

There's a school we tried to coop with (that we have a good relationship with) and they said absolutely not. They would rather drop to 6 man than coop with another school. I think it's the fear of losing their identity or something, but it is going to happen more and more in the future.
