Per Mongo, Rhule and Knighton were up in West Fargo yesterday too to check in on Pietrzak. Wish I would’ve known so I could’ve hidden in the bushes and got some TMZ style pics for the board.

Johntay Cook's schools to watch as Texas WR leaves Longhorns, enters transfer portal

Sources sound off on what's important and the schools to watch for transfer WR Johntay Cook, who left the Texas program last week.

Johntay Cook made big news last week when 247Sports reported that he parted ways with the Texas program and would enter the NCAA transfer portal. The former Top247 wide receiver was looked at as a potential building block for the Longhorns in the future, but he found himself out of the playing rotation as he battled injuries. In two seasons with the Longhorns, Cook caught 16 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns.

At 6-feet, 185 pounds, Cook is ranked as a four-star and the No. 1 wide receiver currently in the 247Sports portal rankings.

Though Cook intends to play elsewhere next season, he cannot officially enter the portal until Dec. 4 or be contacted officially by programs until that's official. 247Sports spoke with sources this week to gather some information on which schools might appear as the best options and what Cook is looking to find at his next destination.

A source close to Cook told 247Sports that he's taking it slowly right now and treating this as an opportunity to find the best spot to get to the league. It was mentioned that logos won't play as big of a role as Cook will be looking into depth charts, offensive scheme and NFL development with a much closer lens. The same source told us that while he may have an idea of what schools can be in play, he wants to see what comes once his name is active in the portal. The spot where he can put up the most production will be high on his list.

We've checked around with several sources, and we're told a large group of schools would be interested. Georgia, Baylor, Ole Miss, SMU, Oregon, Texas A&M, Florida, Miami, Nebraska, South Carolina and Illinois were a few of the names we heard. Michigan finished inside Cook's top group in high school and could be a team to watch as well. While SMU has been a hot portal destination for players from the area, we're told that Cook would likely look to get outside of Dallas. Of the schools mentioned, we're told Ole Miss and Oregon are two schools to watch if they engage.

Of course, we won't know who's truly in the mix until schools can contact Cook on a more official basis, but it sounds like his camp is preparing for a busy portal recruitment. We'll have more once the portal officially opens.

Nebraska is not going away on the recruiting trail as National Signing Day looms.

The Huskers have multiple targets committed elsewhere they want to add to their class, and they’re trending in that direction.

Alabama four-star EDGE commit Dawson Merritt is among them and might be at the top of the list.

Merritt committed to the Crimson Tide this summer over Matt Rhule and Co. in a race that was very close. The staff in Lincoln never relented, even after the commitment didn’t go their way.

And I’ve logged an expert pick, along with my colleague Steve Wiltfong, in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM) for them to ultimately flip Merritt into their class.

Merritt was at Nebraska in September for an unofficial visit, his first trip since his official visit in April. And do not be surprised if he returns to Lincoln for another game in November. The relationships with the staff at Nebraska and the opportunity Merritt sees to get on the field have Matt Rhule’s program in position to be a threat to Alabama late in the process.

Current Huskers commits, players also pushing for Merritt

It’s not just the staff recruiting Merritt to Nebraska. Other commits have gotten close to him, and he has had conversations with players already on the roster in Lincoln, too.

The four-star out of Overland Park (Kan.) Blue Valley was in Tuscaloosa for the Georgia game, but he is not expected back before the end of the season. Nebraska is trying to use location to their advantage, and the Cornhuskers are picking up some momentum in this race.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder is the No. 115 overall prospect in the 2025 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He also ranks as the nation’s No. 14 EDGE and No. 4 recruit in Kansas.
