A good defense but not elite. We do some things really well and are pretty bad at others. The stats that matter most in tight games (run defense and red zone defense) we struggle at.

At this point, more than 1/4 of the games are against non-P4 opponents. Those numbers are unfortunately all going to get worse after 5 more big ten opponents.

Are we the only team that plays games against non power 4 teams
Of course not (although SEC schools tend to have some shitty noncon games later in the season).

Given how the defense has looked the last couple of weeks, I don’t think it’s crazy to assume that the numbers are going to regress. Playing Maryland and Minnesota looked a lot different than Akron and Houston Christian.

We just need to regress to the #21 total defense.

IYKYK.

To be fair, Maryland and Minnesota still have better offenses than Northwestern, Cockeye, and even Penn State now with their back up QBs.

I do think UCLA is clearly playing better offensively, but I'm not ready to say they're better yet. If you take away games vs. Penn State and Michigan State, Nico has 3 TDs and 5 turnovers. However, I do expect Nico to run for 120+ vs. Nebraska.

Speaking of UCLA, keep an eye on their roster vs. Indiana. They have a lot of dudes, including Nico, who are injured. Maybe the bye before Nebraska helps them, but they had 4 starters receive MRIs this week. Berger and Nico have both been limited. I think they're holding on by a string.

The defense would be fine if it was coupled with an offense that could avoid tripping over its own dicks.
The offense isn’t putting the defense in bad spots.

21st nationally in giveaways with 6.
46th nationally in TOP.

That’s not tripping over your dick. If anything that’s complimentary football, and it’s further helped by an improved special teams that’s winning the field position battle (net +8.34)

The only thing keeping this defense from being elite is explosive runs.

87th in opponent runs of 10+ (35)
97th in opponent runs of 30+ (5)
123rd in opponent runs of 50+ (3)

I'm referring to points. This scheme is really built to create havoc when teams are forced to throw the football. If the offense could consistently score points, the defense could begin to thrive more.

Agree, but we are in full on meltdown because of the one game the offense finally cratered. We should have been able to score 30+ against Minny, and that would have been more than enough. For whatever reason we looked like shit. Just had zero complimentary football outside of ST last Friday. I think if we score 28+ in the remaining games we have a damn good shot to win all of them as I feel as though the D will give up 24 or less outside of maybe USC, but that is at home.

What I see is a defense that’s good enough to win 10 games if your offense is elite. Conversely our offense is probably good enough to win 10 games if our defense was elite. Fuck…

I guess 8 wins is about our ceiling 😒

I agree. One of the biggest fucking problems they've had especially against Michigan and Minnesota is blowing opportunities to put run heavy teams down and make them have to throw.

Trade ya some of our red zone D and run D for some of your 3rd down con D and passing efficiency.

Not sure you even need the "with their back up QB" in there. Allar sucked donkey dick this year.

I think their offense is better than Minn though.

i mean, the offense has done just that in 3/5 of our P4 games and the defense pissed away the lead.

Huskers up 20-10 vs. Cincy with 10:46 left in the 4th quarter. defense let them back in.

Huskers up 14-0 vs. Michigan st. In 1st quarter, defense let them back in.

Huskers up 24-14 vs. Maryland towards end of 2nd Q and defense let’s them back in.

Yes the offense sputtered after they got up and that doesn’t help matters, but we also can’t expect them to score every drive. Defense needs to get stops when we build a lead. They’ve failed at that.

In another thread someone has said he would post his wife’s nudes if we didn’t have a top 20 defense. There is a lot at stake here. #13 total defense should feel way better than this.

Worst case scenario really. No nudes for us because of a top 20 defense that actually sucks but is statistically good because of all the shitty offenses we play.
