I think it’s time for a Come to Jesus moment. If you’ve been at NU 4, 5, or 6 years, your last chance to shine is OSU. There are a lot of freshman whose 4 games start at UCLAbia. Step up and lead this team or sit on the bench while the future is built.

Our “leaders” play like shit in big games, so fuck it and let the kids do some damage.

People just need to take a deep breath. Our upcoming schedule is

@ #2 Ohio State (wagon)
UCLAbia (2-4 with 1 Big Ten win)
@ USC (3-4 on a 3 game losing streak)
Wisconsin (5-2… kinda getting better?)
@ Cockeye (just lost to Michigan State… we always play them close)

Win one more to go bowling. Win 2-3 more to play in a “good” bowl game. Take the extra 15 practices the bowl prep gives you and start building momentum for 2025.

Took three deep breathes and we still lost by 50 some points yesterday to a year 1 coach.

LOL. Take a deep breath and be OK with being a lower tier B10 team despite the investment in the staff and program.

This is Nebraska football. We're not New Mexico State.

This! Plus, we aren’t better than any of those teams right now anyway. Our only chance is UCLAbia and we will play tight as shit and fold down the stretch.

Correct. New Mexico State has played in 3 bowl games since we last have and won 2 of them. They’ve also won @ Auburn last year and won 10 games, including playing for the CUSA title. They have been more successful than us in the last 7 years.

And what is their football investment vs NU's?

Even more evidence that our ROI is shit.

I don’t disagree the ROI on Nebraska football (especially season tickets) has been shit for a long long time.

But this team could still go 7-5 or 8-4 this year and be right on schedule despite our obvious areas of deficiency. If you watch college football at large, every team has major flaw areas, including UGA, Alabama, Texas, etc btw, which are on display every single week. We are not perfect, but we are finding ways to beat teams that we are favored to beat. This is what you sign up for when you hire Matt Rhule for your rebuild. It’s a long, multi-year process. Anyone who has talked themselves into something different was always going to be setup for disappointment. But that doesn’t also mean you can’t celebrate and acknowledge the areas that have significantly improved from last season.

I didn't expect this to be a playoff or even a 9 win team. I expected improvement and yesterday didn't indicate any of that. That was a debacle and against a team in Y1 of a rebuild with nowhere near the resources NU has.

You can appreciate progress but you have to acknowledge setbacks and yesterday was the mother of all setbacks.

Sure. If you want to think of it in terms of a standard deviation and look at outliers on the season in terms of performance, CU is probably the top end outlier and IU probably the bottom end outlier. 90% of our performances will be the remaining 5 games, during which we have showed plenty of reason for optimism while also clearly lacking in certain areas that will be addressed once it is time to address them.

You say you didn’t expect this to be a 9+ win team but then also turn around and are mad that this team is flawed. 7 win football teams are inherently flawed. If you were expecting something around that but also expecting us to look like world beaters every week, those two things are unreasonable to expect at the same time.

I'm posting Bryan Wilson (ex Husker, Callahan era) because he's usually the anti-NU guy. He's usually the guy ripping the current staff.

When he's your voice of reason, you know you guys have gone off the deep end.

He makes some good points. I think yesterday was more jarring because it was Indianus in Cignetti's 1st year, and they're probably going to go 11-1 or 10-2 at worst. Kind of a perfect storm of coach, players, and schedule for them, but they sure do look well-coached and appeared to have better athletes than we did.

Besides the obvious coaching issues, I hope this game was an eye-opener for Rhule in terms of his approach to the portal. Keeping and developing a bunch of players from the prior staff is noble, but they all have low ceilings and have experienced a bunch of losing. With the $22M in revenue sharing going into effect next year, we need to go out and get some dudes.

I'm not here to spin anything - because I do think Rhule needs to make as many as 5 changes to his staff. Many things aren't working.

However the Indianus situation was just a buzzsaw. They're 11-1 this year and will go back to sucking as soon as Cignetti leaves for an SEC job next year. This is just a one yr anomaly where Indianus has an incredible team. But every yr around it is absolute shit.

I wouldn't be out in Rhule bc of that game. Wait and see how we do vs UCLAbia, USC, Wisconsin and Cockeye. That's your true barometer.

I can't think of anything in recent CFB history that compares to it. Its not like Indianus was a long-dormant powerhouse from years ago...they have literally been dogcrap in football forever.

Yeah no 1 yr deal.

I consider this like that 10-2 Illinois team like 20 yrs ago. Or the 10-2 Kansas Mangino team. Those were bad programs that caught lightning in a bottle and then reverted back to mean.

This is unique in that it's literally a 1 yr thing only.

The problem I have with saying the portal is the answer is that when it doesn’t work, it fails spectacularly. See Florida State. Even Ole Miss looks to have a little of this going on.

Guys who have been around 4+ years but have been in your program a handful of months just don’t have the same buy-in. If it’s working, then things are fine. If it starts to fall apart, they just don’t give a shit because they have no real investment in the program. Transactional guys are transactional.

Obviously you have to do some supplementing with the portal, but being too reliant on it is scary.

Cignetti had the benefit of portaling a bunch of guys who were already bought in on him.
