Got all the cattle home from stalks here over the last week or so. As they were getting brought home we got the calves down to the vet and worked so we were able to wean them this morning. Still really happy with this years calf crop, probably the best we’ve ever had.

We start calving beginning of august in the pastures. Had majority of them done by the middle of September this year
Since my dad always bought yearlings and finished them I don’t know shit about cow/calf operations other than I was under the impression that all calves were born in late winter…….Feb/March, etc.

So what’s up with August? Sounds like a helluva lot better time that Feb when it’s -15 degrees, wind is blowing and it’s 2 in the morning.

Let’s discuss my Lincoln visit. In the past 36 hours we have:

1. Attended the Huskers vs Sparty WBB game Thursday night. We were up by 22 at halftime and pissed that lead away, almost losing in the last minute. But they hung on……yeah. 🙄

2. Stayed with our long-time friends (Th. night and last night) who live 20 miles sw of Lincoln, near Kramer/Hallem. These are the same friends who abstain from drinking every February (“Love yore Liver” month) and it makes it not as much fun hanging with them. Oh well…….😉

3. Slept in Friday morning as the friends had a funeral to attend. They were gone from 8:45am-1:30pm and we used the time to slip in a ding (two for Mrs B).

4. Stopped at this Denton casino/horse track place (didn’t even know it was a full-fledged casino, right under TO’s nose). What a shit-show that was. Crowded as hell, way too many machines and tables for the available floor space.

5. Headed into town and arrived at the Zoo Bar at 4:30 to catch the early show. Local band (The Scalliwags)……four old guys (keyboard dude was 71) that did a pretty damn good job at some blues tunes. Several songs were their own. A few cover songs. Hadn’t been in the Zoo for 3 yrs……spent somewhere between 100-150 nights in that place since it opened in 1974. Love it……😎

6. Headed south on our way home (to Kramer) and stopped at 9th & South st and ate at the “9 South Char Grill”. (Thanks @Husker Priapism for the rec). Great spot, great menu. Will be going back, as there were several things on the menu that looked good.

7. Home to the friend’s farm. Good night’s sleep and now headed out for the two hour drive back to Beebeetown to the farm I grew up on, where we’ll hang out with my 93 yo mom for a couple of days.

8. Finally……the reason for our trip down here and that’s to babysit three grandkids in west Omaha/Elkhorn Mon-Sunday while their parents spend a week in Cancun.

Could be an adult beverage in my future on Thursday with a few “friends”. Hope I survive that little ordeal……..🤣

I’m shocked 9th Char grill is still open.

I remember the first summer it opened back when I lived in Lincoln.

I figured it would have been replaced now by a chain restaurant.

It’s actually decently common in our area to have what are called “fall calvers” so calving anytime from late summer into the fall. Definitely better conditions for calving. But some difficulties can be extreme heat, coyotes getting the calves, finding the baby calves to tag and vaccinate them in the tall grass (baby calves are very good at hiding) and if the cow does have any problems during birth they aren’t in the lot to help them. But we haven’t had nearly as many calving problems in the fall.

He had always rented our facility for his bull sale for years. Last March was obviously the first one I've had to deal with and their demeanor, ungrateful like attitude just rubbed me wrong. They rented the facility dirt cheap too. They left a mess in the pens and among other things left a poor taste in my mouth. Those cocksuckers never once contacted about signing another lease or discussing rent until they had already printed all of their propaganda, sale catalogs, flyers, etc which of course included our facility as the location.

In a not so nice way I told the shitbag on the phone if he can run southeast Nebraska farm ground to 27,000 an acre he can build his own fucking sale barn. First local that he sent to try to sweet talk me into giving them another year and offering more lease money doesn't even own cattle 😂.

Damn good looking set of fall calves man.

I love being in an area that's got spring and fall calves now more than ever in the salebarn business. Spring calf crop is about to dry up in 2 weeks and then fall calves trickle in start of March then wide open mid March til may/June. Keeps a steady flow of cull cows through the year aside from mide June-Late august.

Heading to AZ to see the daughter. Looking forward to giving and getting a hug from my baby girl as I haven't seen her since Thanksgiving due to her work schedule.
And a month later Mrs. Bomber and I will be terrorizing the golf courses in Scottsdale and Sun City West.........😎

Enjoy that daughter-time.........👍
