Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White met with the media on Monday afternoon as the Huskers continue their preparation for Thursday’s season opener with Minnesota.
A few quick hits from White’s time at the podium:
— White said the decision on who got Blackshirts was “simple.” White said head coach Matt Rhule went with the 11 players the coaches anticipate starting, and hung the jerseys in players’ lockers. He said players were excited — especially the first-timers. White said right now the number of Blackshirts will remain at 11, but that could be open to change if a player emerges.
“It means something to them and it was exciting to watch those guys yesterday walk into the indoor and then see it on them,” White said.
—White said execution this fall has been “going well.”
“They’ve done everything asked…today we put in some new things, tweaked some things, but now it’s about eliminating problems and letting them play fast,” White said.
— White said Nebraska has had more than 6,000 defensive reps this fall in the calls they’ve been doing. He said there’s a hard and fast cut off for when they don’t add more to what players need to know.
— White said linebacker Chief Borders has stood out with his attitude and effort, but said the Florida transfer has also been incredibly consistent. Borders was one of the 11 who earned Blackshirts on Monday.
— Nebraska has moved a number of players around at linebacker. White said Mikai Gbayor has been getting reps at all three linebacker spots. He also highlighted Javin Wright as a player who is starting to show up and make plays. Wright was among the linebackers on the two-deep earlier this week.
— White highlighted defensive end Blaise Gunnerson and safety DeShon Singleton as players who have come the furthest during fall camp. Gunnerson and Singleton both earned Blackshirts on Monday.
—White called August “consistent” for the defense. He said how Nebraska does things — dominant contact, Husker Speed, etc., — has been steady.
— Minnesota “knows who they are, and that’s how they play,” White said. He highlighted Minnesota’s balance in the run-pass game as a reason for their consistency.
