Minchey to Flip

Yes. Nebraska tried to be the best cheap offer.
They weren’t serious.
Agent was smart to not have him sign right away.

If someone offers 1.5 million more than your next best offer you don’t got back and ask for more. You assume they can’t go higher
TBH I do the same thing with my seed and fertilizer salesman. I’ve always told them I’m not playing that game, I’m pricing other guys so you need to give me the best price first time. Difference here though is it sounds like Minchey and his agent didn’t inform Nebraska of this.

No doubt he fucked us. But the portal is a signing business, not a committing business. You can’t leak that you found your qb when he’s not signed. They have to know better.

The very first step is for him to sign. And if he’s not signing, despite telling espn he’s in, then you start leaking that you’re still in the market so you don’t end up looking the fool (and maybe pressure him to honor his commitment).

They are trusting a 20 year old represented by God knows what sort of fringe agent to shoot them straight. It was naive.

I find myself wondering if they heard he was sniffing around Kentucky. If they did, and didn’t head this off before it blew up in their faces, that’s bad. But it’s also bad if they don’t have the contacts to hear what’s going on. There’s no way there weren’t people in the qb market who knew what was going on with the Tech/LSU/Kentucky chain of qb interest.

Minchey definitely seems like a bad actor. But we did not play this smart at all. He can’t be the first duplicitous qb in the market, but somehow we were the first to get embarrassed like this.
What you're talking about is for the PR narrative, though. Maybe we look a little better in the media (although we're far from the first team to lose a player who had said he would sign & then didn't, & people outside Nebraska won't remember that this was a story within a week), but we'd still be in the same place with the QB hunt.

They were desperate. They whiffed on their #1 choice.

We'll likewise overpay for whoever we get now.
Because we are also now desperate.

Everyone shopping for anyone in the portal is desperate to varying levels. Thats why it’s dumb when people say stuff like “we can’t pay him as much as we paid Raiola! He’s never even started!”. Why can’t we? This is the guy we identified as our top priority in this class. Now we’re going to pay Aidan Chiles or someone similar who we like less 2/3rds of what we paid Raiola or whatever. How is that any better?

There is no rationality in the portal market, only self imposed guardrails. For some reason Nebraska and Nebraskans inherently are trying to practice “fiscal responsibility” by assigning arbitrary dollar figures to positions and eliminating ourselves from bidding on top talent because of it. Until that mindset changes it doesn’t matter who the GM or coach is.

It’s absolutely laughable that if Minchey was the guy we wanted we didn’t give him an offer good enough to prevent him from even having this opportunity to begin with.

Here’s the thing. Even if you don’t tell them.
Company a quotes you 250 a month.
Comps b quotes you 125 a month
You will assume company a gave you what they consider a competitive offer already.
But sat you give company a some slack and decided to read reviews and you find Jeff Sims, Haarberg, Raiola and Lateef.

Are you willing to go back and negotiate with them?

It seems a lot of you aren’t actually reading these threads—you’re just rage-posting.

If you actually dig into what’s been posted in this thread—from X (Twitter) and credible sources—the picture is pretty clear:
NU had Minchey locked in, but he stalled on signing. NU got played. Minchey was quietly talking to Kentucky the entire time and never told NU. When Kentucky missed on Leavitt, they came in with a massive offer. Minchey jumped immediately—didn’t even give NU a chance to counter—because Kentucky’s deal blew everyone else out of the water and nobody else was likely to offer him that. Would NU have countered? Nobody knows because they never got the chance.
Listen to the tPB pod. A lot of the frustration comes from us putting ourselves in position to be fucked. We were in contact and thought we had an agreement, should've had a signed contract 10 mins after portal opened rather than let him keep stringing us along.

Deep down, I think a lot of people felt this might happen when the "visit" got pushed back to the 7th. That tidbit certainly raised a red flag for me.

Been a tough year for the Husker coaching staff. Next year's not looking to bright either. Is it to late to join the Missouri Valley Conference? Just for football though. LOL

Agreed. When this clown was giving NU the runaround and stringing it out, it would have been nice to see NU walk away instead of getting punked like they did.

Black and chambered both also show committed and not signed.
Why can Nebraska not have guys sign over commit?

If we gave Minchey what we paid Raiola then everyone would be bitching about that instead. Do you want me to pull up 50 posts on here talking about how we needed to stop over spending on QB and invest more in OL/DL instead?

Literal lol
This is fair.

But it’s more about the staff looking like giant losers again.

Sir I am reading multiple paragraph long posts about people giving up on football because some kid (who got beat out by a freshman) they never heard of 10 days ago decided he'd rather take double the money to play closer to home.

he isn't THAT much better of a prospect than TJ Lateef.

edit: Rhule/Big Red do look like dumb dicks who got strung along. When a kid goes on ESPN and says he is coming and his agent has the papers and says he is going to sign what else can you do? Maybe Dana should have flown to Kentucky and held him at gunpoint

Agreed that it is a bit over the top. The difference between Minchey and Lateef/Lagway/Chiles/Pribula/etc is that there isn't much tape of Minchey playing D1 Football.

I think much of the frustration is that NU can't convince a kid they were focused on to come here.

that's fair. Still not sure what the coaches could have done. It sounds like they were under the impression he was N too until his agent called and said "whoops Kenny accidently signed the papers for Kentucky...welp see ya later". They very well may have matched/countered his offer but were not giving a chance.

One thing I am curious on is what he was promised here vs Kentucky? Did Kentucky guarantee him a starting job vs Nebraska saying he would have to beat out Lateef?
