Nebraska football has long wanted to get involved in St. Louis recruiting. The Huskers have had several great players from the area during its history, but it’s been a challenging area for the team in recent cycles.

The last Husker to come from St. Louis directly from high school was running back Tre Bryant, who’s career was cut short because of knee injuries, but under then Mike Riley, it was hoped the running back might usher in a run of recruits from what’s quickly become one of the biggest recruiting hotbeds in the Midwest.

On Monday the Huskers rolled back into St. Louis and Mickey Joseph was busy making offers and looking to once again solve the mystery of why Nebraska can’t gain traction despite being relatively close in proximity. Here’s who the Huskers offered:

Tyler Grant — Christian Brothers College defensive lineman with double digit offers already, Nebraska will have to fight it out against teams like Arkansas, Cockeye, Cockeye State and Wisconsin, all of whom have a good rapport already with the three-star defender.

Christian Gray — A four-star defensive back from DeSmet, Gray already has predictions in for Notre Dame to land him on the 247Sports Crystal Ball. The Irish are the favorites, but Gray has plenty of suitors. Nebraska will have to work fast to even begin to have a chance here.

Brandon Henderson — Nebraska became one of the first schools to come through for this offensive lineman, joining Cockeye State and Miami of Ohio. The East St. Louis lineman is already good sized at 6-foot-5, 330 pounds.

Jeremiyah Love — This Christian Brothers College athlete could end up on either side of the ball with a projectable 6-foot-1, 195-pound frame. Love has early offers from Boston College, Cockeye State and Missouri at this time.

Donovan McIntosh — A St. Mary’s defensive back, McIntosh is built how Nebraska tends to like its secondary members as he’s 6-foot-3, 170 pounds. The Huskers join Arkansas and Kansas as the early offers for McIntosh, who is not ranked by 247Sports at this time.

Miles McVay — A Top247 Composite member, McVay added to his already impressive offer list. The East St. Louis lineman now has more than 25 offers, including Alabama, Cincinnati, Georgia, LSU, Michigan and others.

Fredrick Moore — This Cardinal Ritter Prep wide receiver added a Nebraska offer as well. Cardinal Ritter is one of the schools the Huskers weren’t able to get into during its last big push into the area. Moore has near double-digit offers including several from the Big Ten like Illinois, Indiana and Maryland.

Paris Patterson — Another East St. Louis offensive lineman, Patterson now has four offers as the Huskers joined Cockeye State,Miami of Ohio and Tennessee as early offers. Patterson is 6-foot-6, 345 pounds.

Zach Ortwerth — Joseph made this offer to the St. Louis University tight end. It’s the first offer of the cycle for the 6-foot-5, 220 pound tight end, but other schools like Cockeye, Kansas and Notre Dame have all been in contact.

But those years of experience he learned working at LSU are probably paying off. Ed O is a heck of a recruiter so I'm sure he picked up some tricks. That whole staff was different level than what we had. This is one of the reasons I want us to have a good portion of our staff with Power5 experience beofer we hire them. Learn on someone else's dime plus learn from experienced coaches. My biggest concern hiring Frost was bringing in a bunch that basically had next to no Power5 experience. Add in a couple young inexperienced coaches with proven veterans. Just like cooking a good stew, need a variety of ingredients that compliment each other.

Kids do what they want, bad character kids, "we already have amaaaazing TE's" covid, transfer portal, SF is a genius and is passing on these swimtown boyz, etc etc etc etc etc etc. Mickey doesn't seem like he wants to hear excuses... 🤔 Sounds like my kinda guy.

We need those Omaha/Bellevue kids to be competitive again at a high level. For some reason Lincoln doesn't produce that many D1 kids outside of this class upcoming.

A friend of mine has a son who is a SR that is getting offers within the 200 mile radius of Lincoln and he got his first real contact from Nebraska when Busch reached out to him right after he was hired full time. Covid hurt this kids recruitment because he couldn't go to camps and was needed to play out of position for his high school. He is one hell of an athlete from a family that is littered with college and pro athletes. They are scheduling a visit to Nebraska. They have lots of family in Nebraska plus relatives who have played at Nebraska but never heard from the Nebraska Staff until Busch contacted him. Not sure if he would be considered a Scholarship Offer or a Preferred Walk On but I will get some scoop on this. Will be interesting to see what they think of Busch.

This doesn't surprise me in the slightest. Sioux Falls Washington has produced more scholarship athletes than almost any school in the past ten years, but when they came up here the first time, they went to the wrong school. The head coach at that school told them they were at the were at the wrong school.

That's still not as embarrassing as Barney going to Bellevue West and asking by name for a coach, who had died a couple years ago.
