It doesn't sound like Sanders won the job exactly. Tennesse had a multi-year player who was 1st string at RT all spring and then entered the portal and signed with Colorado. Sanders practiced with the 2s and 3s all spring. So, it sounds more likely that the incumbent RT wanted more money (likely based on a CU offer) that Tennessee wouldn't pay because they had Sanders behind him and he was already making quite a bit. They said he was learning fast but was an unfinished product. He has needed to put on weight - he added 20 pounds since January and still need to put on about ten more before the season.

I think the big paydays for very highly ranked freshman OTs is one reason they almost have to play. It's hard to tell a starting senior that this freshman is making 1.5M but you'll only make $800K (hypothetical numbers). It's also hard to afford to be paying $3-$4M a year to stockpile two guys at one position. It is a situation where the guy you take and pay that much has to play because of payroll management.

Sanders, though, was not a consensus number one who came in as an almost certain starter. Fasusi was consensus number 1.. Sanders was the number 3 OT in On 3 and 247.

All that being said, I'd guess Sanders would've passed Johnson up by the end of his freshman year anyway.
Yeah I wasn’t quite sure how it all played out but I knew there returning RT transferred to CU and basing off of Twitter replies from Tennessee fans they made it sound like Sanders won the job so the other dude left. Sanders was the number 1 OT at one point this, wasn’t he?

Not recruiting, but it happened in May!
