Dean:
Nebraska is adding the Sun Belt defensive player of the year
Nebraska is getting a football player in
Watson-Trent. He was named the Sun Belt Conference defensive player of the year at Georgia-Southern. He had 120 total tackles, including 7.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks, to go along with four forced fumbles, two QB hurries and a pass breakup.
Watson-Trent was a first-team All-Sun Belt selection in both 2023 and 2024 and a second-team selection in 2022.
It’s not easy to find this type of production in the transfer portal, and after losing some key linebackers from the 2024 team, NU’s patience paid off with the addition of Watson-Trent, who appears to be able to plug in immediately as a starting player.
Watson-Trent has played over 2,500 career snaps at LB
Watson-Trent has played 2,502 defensive snaps throughout his career at Georgia Southern, along with another 335 snaps on special teams.
Watson-Trent has racked up 363 career tackles dating back to the 20220 season. To put that number in perspective, it would rank No. 2 all-time at Nebraska in total tackles, only behind Barrett Ruud’s 432 tackles and head of Jerry Murtaugh’s 342 career tackles.
Watson-Trent was Georgia Southern’s highest-graded defensive player in 2024 at 79.6 on PFF. He’s been involved in 124 STOP tackles in three years, which are impactful plays where the defense wins the down.
He had 37 STOP tackles in 2024. The most any NU defender had was 32 this past season (LB
John Bullock). He had 45 STOPs in 2023 and 41 in 2022. The last NU defender to have 40+ STOP in a season was LB
Luke Reimer in 2021 (42).
John Butler is loading up his LB position
Nebraska took some big hits in the portal at the linebacker position in
Mikai Gbayor,
Stefon Thompson, and
Princewill Umanmielen, and they lost
MJ Sherman,
John Bullock, and
Javin Wright to graduation.
They return
Vincent Shavers and
Willis McGahee IV, who saw significant playing time as true freshmen. The Big Red will add Watson-Trent and Oklahoma’s
Dason McCullough to that group, along with three talented four-star true freshmen –
Dawson Merritt,
Christian Jones, and
Pierce Mooberry.
The question now is that enough at linebacker? We saw NU already decided not to bring in West Virginia LB
Trey Lathan, which directly lines in place with the commitment of Watson-Trent. They are also tentatively scheduled to bring Oregon linebacker
Jaden Moore in on Monday.
