Malachi Coleman didn't have to wait long to hear from
Mickey Joseph.
The dead period ended and Coleman got a chance to interact with the new Husker wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator. While it's not sure what position the four-star prospect will play at the next level, Joseph has an idea where he'd like to see Coleman play.
The coach made a strong impression.
"He was straight to the point of nobody is going to have a better relationship with me and nobody is going to be as open and honest as him," Coleman explained to Husker247. "I loved that. He was personable and easy to talk to and made me feel even more wanted at Nebraska, even though we don’t know what I'm going to play yet. I look forward to building a relationship with him because I know he could help me get to where I want to."
The 6-foot-5, 190-pound Coleman's explosive ability as a wide receiver already and his athleticism as a defender off the edge make him a popular prospect, with offers already from Nebraska, Minnesota, Maryland, Kansas State, Kansas and Northern Cockeye. That list will keep expanding.
"The recruiting process is crazy. I got coaches calling, texting, showing up to school, asking me to visit," Coleman said. "It’s very overwhelming at first, but we are figuring out how to manage it. My priorities right now are school and getting better so next season it’s without a doubt I am as good as I know I can be. The recruiting process will only pick up from here and I’m going to try and enjoy it because you only go through it one time. But at the end of the day, I'm going to do what’s best for me."
Coleman had just finished up a basketball game with Lincoln East on Friday night, with his team posting a dominating win. Because it's hoops season, Coleman hasn't wanted to overload his January recruiting schedule, but he did have junior day event visits planned to Missouri (this weekend) and Nebraska (this weekend).
But the snowy weather wasn't cooperating with the plans to head to Mizzou.
"We had to postpone the Mizzou visit because the road conditions are terrible and we don’t want to risk it," Coleman said. As for the Nebraska visit, he knows the main thing he wants to learn from it.
"Just seeing how they teach their players and operate during a normal day."
A normal day for him these days is all sorts of busy. The messages keep coming, and that's not about to change for a prospect like him.
