Editorial Looking Ahead: What Does Rhule Really Have to Build On Going Into Year 4?

I've been saying this for the last two years. Who are we offensively? What are we trying to do? Do we have a system that has basic repetitive principals? Nothing is apparent.
Would you be able to recognize an offensive system/identity?

Felt like he had one on defense and then apparently shredded it this last year.

My only hope there is TW was able to flip it quick. I think he hired a good DC, so I am hopeful he can flip it quick again.

Problem is, you had one problem solved and at a championship level.... now you are likely going backwards.

I have no clue what they want to do on offense.......I think they tried to have an offense for Dylan vs having an offense for Nebraska. So year 4 is probably closer to year 1 on offense.

LOL yes. 28 years of coordinating a defense. 32 years of coaching football. 10 semifinals, 3 state championships. 1 runner up. 4 state championship games in which we gave up a total of 26 pts. (0, 12, 7, 7).

I would say I have some perspective.

Nebraska's offensive identity can be summed up in one word. Ambiguous! Spread, Air raid, Pro, Wing, Tempo, etc... .
Right now its a hodge podge of stuff. This can be great if you have the dudes to do it. Keeps a defense off balance, attacks weaknesses using a variety of formations, shifts, RPO...etc. I think at a place like Nebraska its hard to recruit to that. I would love for us to get back to a power/pro style offense. One that can utilize the spread as needed but is rooted in a basic principled system. Run first. I don't care if it gap or zone scheme or a combo of both, but establish a run game identity and build from there.

Right now our offense and to an extent our defense look like Fred's first few years. Just trying to find something that works and works fast. Problem is it never works long.

Im all for a big step back in year 4 and even 5 to establish identities on both sides of the ball with the hopes of a giant leap forward in year 6. What's another couple of years after 18 years of mediocrity?

So you’re saying we’re in for another 3 abysmal years before he gets the right dudes in here? Unacceptable, imo. If he could coach and recruit half as good as he can talk, we’d be winning 10 games a year.

I have made this comparison before.... feels like they are both a tipping points. Fred was able to make the changes necessary. But I do think Fred had what he wanted to do in his core. He did adapt to the B1G.

Woof.... he would lose a lot of the fan base.

Also it is really hard to sell it takes that amount of time given what Indiana did with a bunch of 3 stars. I am not saying in 2027 we need to go undefeated, but I don't think you need to take a big step back.

Not arguing that at all. But it doesn't change the fact that that's where we are. 4th year 4th different DC (kind of). 4th year 2nd OC. How many position coaching changes in that time? Hard to have any consistency with that kind of turnover.

Teams with great rosters can withstand that inconsistency. Nebraska can not.

What do you think his identity is?

I can guess based what he has said, but through 3 years he has utterly failed in building it
Depends if we're talking HH at qb or Raiola for specifics. You certainly wouldn't have the same "identity" with both QB's.

I think what he'd prefer is a true dual threat qb like 90% of college football today. Balanced offense that doesnt make mistakes and scores a lot of touchdowns.

You adjust if your qb is better at one or the other.

Defense strong up front to stop the run and good secondary to cover receivers.

Basically tackle gud and make interception, fumble and sack plays.

Again coaches that take their identity to the extreme are coaches that usually have pretty good teams but rarely great teams. Ferentz, Peepee.

Idgaf about the identity. Just win.

right. And that’s all on him. He’s the one who has hired poorly (with the jury still out on the second OC and the third DC to be determined).

He hit a home run at ST and is now apparently going to replace him with a warm body in house.

I’m fine with giving someone time who’s done something to give me reason to believe in him.

But he has been a terrible CEO, and we were supposed to finally be getting a guy who could run that stuff competently.

I really wanted Rhule to be the guy but if you had told people when he was hired that after year 3 you’d be on your third DC, second OC, third ST, you’d have squandered a 5 star qb, you’d be a mid- to lower-tier Big Ten offense, and you’d be in the second year of trying to rebuild your DL, l think most fans would have said, “even with a 6- and a 7-win regular season, we should probably keep looking.”

I agree and it took Fred time to get that done. Husker fans keep thinking that this football program is special. It is but only to us. And the fact remains that we were in a deep dark hole after Frost. And honestly have been for almost 20 years. Its going to take a lot to get out of that. That's not to excuse MR. He owns a lot of our current issues.

Im simply saying that we tried the fast...make it happen now approach and it hasn't panned out well. Things need to be squared away and shored up. No loose ends. No flexibility. No gray area. Black and White. This is what we do. This is how we do it. Get on board or get the Fuck out!

Just how I would go about it at this point in time and some times that takes a big step back!

Hard to dispute any of that. I'm not happy either. But history is not on our side in our endeavors to change coaches every 5 years. If you don't learn from history your doomed to repeat it (Churchill).

My take is Nebraska was barely a functioning football program after Riley/Frost. The money has always been there but the structure was in disarray. It's going to take time to rebuild it. Doesn't excuse some of the bone headed stumbles for sure, but does allow for a bit of leniency moving forward. IMHO
